Ads Quietly Added to Deus Ex

Post by Solaries »

They've stealth patched in real ads on to the loading screens in Deus Ex 3.

As consumers in a free market our money is the only thing that corporate *******s will listen to. By all means, steal the game! I'm sure it's easy to find a torrent. Those of us who've already payed for it can find a link to an ad-disabler of sorts in that link.

The only way to stop this kind of business practice is to boycott the games.

I understand it's vaguely annoying, but does it really matter? It's not as if you are obliged to look at them or buy the product advertised. In a sci-fi game where advertising isn't out of place, I really don't mind whatsoever if it means that developers get a little extra money to help make a good game.

Where do you draw the line? How long before we're getting mandatory video ads in products that we pay to play? It's essentially already there.

You mean like the NVidea logos that have played at the start of games for around a decade now?

I draw the line at the point it doesn't make sense within a particular game - they can put all the ads they want in Deus ex as its a near future game with tons of fictional advertising in it anyway - they may as well make a bit of money on the side. If they were doing the same thing, in say, Dragon Age, I'd have a lot more of an issue with it as it wouldn't make sense within the context. The second line is when advertising interupts the actual gameplay experience - if it say pauses at a loading screen to try and sell me coke, that would be too far. But for small logos in the corners in a game that would have advertising around, I really don't mind whatsoever.

I'd much rather reward a developer with my money for making a good game than not buy the product and contribute to a developer going down on the basis of somethign that has nothing to do with the game itself. Good game + ads is infinitly preferable to no game at all.

No ads in the PC version at all. Yet another reason not use crappy consoles.

On another note, pirating a game because they are using ads to get more money, thereby depriving them of money seems...counterproductive to say the least.
