Enemy stats
I bought the game and am playing it for the first time. I have just started and am wondering if there is any way you can bring up enemy stats beforehand so I can see if they are above my skills or not?

In general, the farther an area is located off from the main road that runs from Nashkel to Baldur's Gate the more difficult. But that is not exact by any means. There are some tough encounters for low level parties not far from the road.
Best thing is to have Imoen (or another thief) go into shadows and scout ahead of the party when you are exploring a new area. You can always come back later to mop up if you see something that looks tough.
Also if you talk to the locals you will get warnings about what "could" face you in some of the areas (Ulcaster School for example). I forget who in Beregost says this but they tell you to wait till you are a little more seasoned to go there.
