Guardian at Kuldahar

If I don't kill the guardian (I tried a hundrend times and I just can't) when I return to Kuldahar may I continue the story without that and if yes would I make a mistake?

The guardian is an optional battle, if you solve the yuanti threat by killing all of them instead of closing the portal by killing the guardian you can continue with the story, you can finish the game without.

I recommend returning later when your characters reached level 16, just remember where you place the things needed for summoning it.

I tried to go back but the thing in the tree was gone and I couldn't get back there.
