So Little Activity?

Post by Ragin Cajun »

I'm stunned by the lack of posts. Probably the fewest posts on a new game release since I found GB years ago. Is nobody playing this or is it so addictive that nobody has time to post or is it so easy that there is nothing to post about?

I got it Friday and am enjoying it. Played all weekend but didn't get to the game yesterday.

But still, stunned by the lack of activity on this game. What gives?

Well I guess a lot of us who got burned when Oblivion came out are waiting either to get feedback or for the mods/patches to fix the problems. I rushed out and bought Oblivion ASAP, have no intentions of buying Skyrim for quite a long time.

So far I've read some encouraging things, but an equal number of discouraging ones.

Well I've spent most of my free time playing the game (and only sporadically checking in on GB) and so far I really enjoy it (it's beaten Oblivion in every way imo) and while nothing can really topple Morrowind (which is my favourite game) it truly is an amazing game.

I imagine many are just playing the game instead of writing about it here, but I was also wondering about the lack of activity.

Even with mods and stuff I never got into Oblivion and wasn't even able to play Morrowind until just before Oblivion came out (computer issues and all that entailed buying a brand new computer for an TES game for the third time). I've been very happy with Skyrim thusfar. Granted it's about 20 hours of total play time but honestly that probably the most I've gotten in a TES game since Arena (Boy, wish I could get that to load again on my new computer.)

All in all I'm happiest with this game more than any prior game IMO. But it blows not being able to get quest help here since nobody is posting. Granted I've only had one bug appear that fixed on a reload. No crashes thusfar. And the gameplay/questlines are pretty straightforward.

I love it, i've been waiting for this since i got introduced to oblivion, waiting on Skyward sword because of it. i havn't been far cause between work college wife child, barely any time but i've put in maybe 10-15 hrs of exploring. Other forums are better for Skyrim, but i only get GB at work for some reason it doesn't get websense blocked.

Just finished Skyrim yesterday. I forced myself to finish it once but there is no chance of me touching that turd again.

The whole game is buggy, full of generic "go clear dungeon X" quests and has no real character interaction. You can just walk up to some NPC and tell them "hurr I need you to follow me" and that's it, there's usually no conversation whatsoever and even in the rare cases of well-written dialogue the voice acting is horrible.

what a pathetic game

I've spent all free time playing the game. Our platform is the Xbox 360, and the weekend after getting the game 11/11/11 helped encourage us to finally get an HD tv (our old tv was 15-20 years old, the text was blurred, and the screen was cut off).
I've only encountered 3 bugs so far (and I'd estimate about 50+ hours of game play each): with a minor quest where a body vanishes; sometimes dragons do a flyby without attacking me (but I scanned that not all dragons are supposed to attack); one time I didn't absorb a dragon soul out of about 16 or so dragons I destroyed.
I have been a fan of the flavor of Arena, Daggerfall, and Oblivion so I was delighted to play a game within this setting again. A great deal of time has been invested in this game in the setting, and I enjoy the ongoing improvements.
These games are about "go clear out" this or "fetch" that. The dialogue is limited and doesn't seem to provide as much variables as other fantasy rpg's. However, that's what these games have always been and I enjoy the quests immensely. What I found to be a vast improvement over Oblivion is that although there's a similar feel to each category of dungeon (cave, racial ruin, camp, fortress, burial site) which I'd expect (all ancient dwarf ruins having similar architectural style choices), each dungeon has something unique. The dungeons with something special tend to have even more visual elements that are eye openers (the summoning of the wolf queen, for example). I really enjoy that when I sneak into a place, I can overhear clues about what's going on.
When I've had a stressful day, I get a thrill knocking down dragons. I wish there were more dragon encounters.
I enjoy that the background "street" conversations aren't as jarring as Oblivion. The conversations feel more natural, so I place it as background aura.
As far as the games for Xbox go that I have, I value Skyrim as the most enjoyable for me.

I think the lack of posts on Skyrim is just related to these forums having become somewhat quiet generally.

As to the game, had it not been given to me I wouldn't be playing it right now because as a general rule of thumb I rarely buy games when they first come out.

That being said, I'm very surprised by how much I've been enjoying Skyrim. As a straight out-of-the-box experience it far surpasses vanilla Oblivion.. and in certain respects (primarily a sense of life and atmosphere) unmodded Morrowind as well.

There are very definitely things I would like to see modders fix, for sure, but overall it's been a shockingly pleasant experience... made even more pleasant by the fact that it even runs extremely well (and still looks incredible) on older computers. My machine is three years old and my graphics card is slightly below minimum requirements, yet I'm using medium/high settings, achieving a good, smooth fps, and I rarely encounter CTDs.

Well, I've logged well over 90 hours on the Xbox platform, and I've encountered a couple bugs, only one of them was game breaking but as soon as I logged into Xbox Live there was a patch that fixed it immediately. Overall, I love this game. I play a necro-warrior that tends to sneak around a lot and that's because there's so much more to sneaking then there was before. I find myself constantly sneaking around in my clunky heavy armor to try and get the stealth kills and listening in on enemy conversations. Neither in Morrowind or Oblivion did I ever really feel the need to sneak but I'm already making plans on making a stealth primary character after I reach level 50 (am 49 with 8/10ths of progress).

Though what really gets me is the atmosphere of the game, if I'm walking down the city, it actually feels like I'm walking through a living street filled with other people talking about completely random topics, most of them are past achievements you played a part in. And that people will recognize you for your achievements, though only random NPCs. Any quest specific character pretty much doesn't recognize you, the Dragon Slayer/Assasin/Arch-mage/Theif/War Hero. But still it does feel pretty satisfying when I pass by a guard and he slips me a "Hail Sithis!" When I go off exploring, the world seems almost limitless. I'm honestly dedicating days upon days to just discovering/clearing new areas and when I'm outside I can almost feel cold winds on my back, or the crunchy twigs below my feet. Skyrim brings a whole new level of immersion I can only hope to enjoy in future games.

The magic system seems like an upgrade, though some would disagree with me, and while I don't like that we can't make our own spells I do find the crafting professions to be extremely gratifying. Instead of simply raiding a dungeon to get my armor, I had to max out smiting and then enchanting so i could increase my smiting even more to make the best possible armor I could! And that's after I personally mined each and every single piece of ebony ore that went into my daedric armor and weapons, and improving them to be twice as effective. Then enchanting them with souls I personally farmed with a profession that I grinded to get up just to make the best set of armor I possibly could. On that note, enchanting has been modified that you can't apply whatever you want to any pierce of clothing or armor. So you can't make full suit of magic resistance and instantly become impervious to mages. Personally, i like this since it deters us from making ridiculously overpowered gear (Though after going all the steps I did to make my armor, it pretty much is anyways) and ruining the game for us. I understand some would prefer to enchant their armor as they see fit but for players like me, this forced us to add a little variety into the mix.

As for the short comings of the game, yeah there are some bugs. For instance, after going through the trouble of mastering conjuring to have two permanent zombie minions I find out later that they have a habit of dissapearing after a loading screen and you can barely alter their gear to how you see fit. The latter isn't so much a bug so much as it's a frustrating fact. You might as well get a follower and give them some armor you made to protect them. (I tried giving a follower gear before zombifying them and though it worked at first, after a few loading screens they swapped back to default armor). And the faction quest lines just seemed a bit too short for some. The companions and College of winterhold mainly. I did maybe two quests before I joined The Circle, and I think one of them was my initiation and it took my literally 4 quests before I became the arch-mage. At least in Oblivion, I had to earn my rank no matter what guild I joined.

Well that's my two dozen cents.
