Can a familiar gain class levels?

Post by Skelly Hands »

Hello everyone! I'm new here, but I made this account to ask a 3.5 d&d question I can't find the answer to, ANYWHERE.

SO, I'm a 3rd level wizard necromancer, and I have a toad for my familiar. I chose the familiar variant "Path Of the Assistant" in "Crouching Monkey hidden Toad" for the int bonus and speak with master at a 1st level. It just occurred to me, that since my toad has an intelligence score of 13, FAR higher than an animal, or other familiars, can my toad take a class level? For an example rogue? My DM says if I can find a source stating such, I can give "Puscakes" the toad some sweet, sweet rogue levels. So help me out friends, I am pretty curious to what you all have to say.

No, it's a familiar, and it gains abilities as a familiar. If you want him to gain class levels, make him your cohort via Leadership, but then you loose him as a familiar.
It's not because it isn't expressisly forbidden, that you can actually do it.

BTW, a much more active and knowledgable forum can be found at: Brilliant Gameologists | Play Like You Have To.

Thanks man. Puscakes is pretty badass as it is, I suppose Having a +21 to hide, and access to my spells could easily make a mage rogue just by the spells I pick each level. > :D
