Most likely a bug

Post by Frostguard »

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to Baldur's Gate 2. I don't really know where this thread would belong; the reason is that it seems to be exactly on the border between the Shadows of Amn and the Throne of Bhaal.

My character was a Neutral Good Dwarven Berserker, whom I imported to Throne of Bhaal (from the last occasion I could save, which was before placing the final bottle of the Tears of Bhaal). After wandering around in the expansion, I suddenly noticed that the alignment of the character was switched to Neutral Evil. I strongly disliked that, and I was pretty much certain that it was a bug as I paid extreme attention not to do anything that could count as evil in such a game. So, shame or not, I decided to use a savegame editor (Shadowkeeper) to edit it back. And there I saw something that further confirmed that it is a bug: the editor still displayed that he was Neutral Good, therefore I seem to have no chance to revert him to original. I guess I can still play the game this way, but being evil just irritates me, especially that I won't stop following the good path.

Thanks in advance if someone can help!

What you describe is not a bug. It is what happens when you pass one of the Hell Trials by making an 'evil' choice, and you must have done that. It can't be switched back with ShadowKeeper, as I know because I was in a similar situation some time ago.

Your best bet is to replay the Trials sequence making the "right" choices. Sorry.

You did something far worse than stealing, blackmailing or slaughtering hundreds of innocents which leaves your alignment intact, you didn't do exactly what the developers wanted you to do in chapter 7 (which was added so they could spread for marketing that your actions have consequences on your alignment) and therefore deserve to get punished hard by becoming evil (of course not directly after the deed which didn't fit into the stereotype but delayed so it will be too late when you realize).

But since your character's alignment doesn't really affect anything you can just ignore it.

Actually it does affect something. Protection from [blank], items that require [blank] alignment, Balthazar joining you, Saerileth..

Either unimportant or added by 3rd party mods not really recommended for first time players.

Thanks a lot for the answers. Saved me some time, really.
Fortunately, I had a backup save from the time before killing Irenicus on the Tree of Life. As that was a piece of cake, I had no real problems.

Shame or not, I checked out a guide to find out what I had been doing wrong, and it was my luck; only one trial did I do the evil way, and that was the dragon. Most likely I accidentally clicked somewhere where I shouldn't have, since I remember that the first time I ended up having to kill it. This time I was more careful and I remained Neutral Good (what's more, Anomen has turned Lawful Good, too, and I rejoiced - maybe that had happened earlier, I don't know). I also noticed that accidentally I omitted a quest from the first town in the Throne of Bhaal, so I was lucky there, too. Actually, this "bug" has brought more good than bad, apparently.

I missed that 200,000 experience points, though, but the resistances are maybe more worth it.
