imperial legion: to join or not to join

Post by zemstvos »

Considering that the Gray-Manes are supposed to be favoring the Stormcloak faction, will joining the Imperial Legion negatively affect my interactions with Eorlund Gray-Mane (the big-shot blacksmith at the Companions' base)?

No.
There are no consequences to your actions in Skyrim, that don't involve killing chicken.

There are no consequences that directly affect us as players in the Skyrim civil war quests (besides what faction to join which will net you some faction specific gear), but there are consequences. The political map of Skyrim will be rewritten so to speak. New jarls will be installed in some of the holds depending on what faction you decide to join and officers of one of the factions will be installed in some of the holds along with the new jarls. New dialogue options will available fx. with the dunmer and the new jarl in Winterhold if you completed the civil war quests for the legion. If you join the Stormcloaks some new dialouge will be available with the head of the Battle-born in Whiterun (maybe new dialogue is available with the Greymanes if you join the legion - I can't recall; but the game won't exclude you from your usual interactions with Eorlund). There are other examples, but this is the sort of thing you can affect with your choices in siding with one of the warring factions.
The civil war like many other aspects of the game can be seen as part of the setting of the game and you are presented with choices to change part of this setting = consequences. This choice/consequence aspect of the game could definitely be constructed in a better, more complex and tangible way in relation to the player character, but it's there.

Other than that there are a few choices outside the civil war quests that have consequences and some of them affect the player more directly fx. killing or not killing a certain crazy member of a certain faction means gaining or losing a potential follower later in the game.
