Diablo II - Unhandled Exception: Access Violation {c000005}
Diablo II - Unhandled Exception: Access Violation {c000005}
So I finally end ACT II and I go onto ACT 3. Walked around Kurest (spelling?) and decided to save and exit. I come back 3 hours later to continue play and the screen loads until I click on my character. When I do it freezes and I get this warning: UNHANDLED EXCEPTION_ACCESS VIOLATION {c000005} I tried several times but nothing has worked.
I did research and it seems this was a major headache that Blizzard had trouble correcting back in the early days of release (2000 to 2002). The issues ranged from IRQ conflicts to background tasks to low RAM to nVidia driver conflicts to underpowered power supplies , etc.
Well my socket 939 with XP Pro w/SP 2 has 2 gigs of RAM, a 550 watt psu, a connect3D X800 GTO 256 meg vid card (ATI), etc., more than meets the requirements and it certainly isn't demanding of my system.
Prior to all this I had no issues playing the game. Because Blizzard in their infinite wisdom failed to provide a save system whereby one could return to an earlier save I am basically stuck where I am at.
Any ideas on what I can do? Everything I have researched is dated to the first half of this decade. Help would truly be appreciated.
* One other thing: I have had the expansion installed fromthe beginning and I patched with the veray latest and last patch available.

Is it a new CD or a used CD, any of the ones you used to install the game that is?
Sometimes even a minor scratch on a CD could mean that part of a file might not get transferred.

It is brand new game with brand new disks. I did even further research and the bottom line is this issue is a perpetual one. It doesn't matter if you have the best of PC hardware or the latest patches or drivers because it strikes even the newest machines. Since 2000 Blizzard has yet to rectify the problem which squarly resides in their coding. One would think that one of the many patches they released for this game would have corrected the issue. Anyway...
Here is what I had to do to rectify the problem:
1. Transfer my saved game to another folder.
2. Uninstall the game and delete the Diablo folder.
3. Run CheckDisk which took some time.
4. Run defragment.
5. Reinstall the game.
6. Patch the game.
* It worked but if I have to go through this again I might just leave it uninstalled!

The instructions given by Ferrick are pretty clear. Basically this is what he did.
1) Copied his current save game (can be found in C:\Program Files\Diablo II\saves). There will be a bunch of files in there. Just copy all of them into a new folder. You could even copy them to the desktop, so long as it isn't in the Diablo II folder.
2) Uninstall the game and delete all the leftover files in the C: drive. i.e. The original Diablo II folder. I'm pretty sure this doesn't need an explanation.
3) Run the check disk. Done by accessing My Computer. Right click on your C: drive and select Properties. Once the Properties window opens up, select the Tools tab. You should see something called Error-Checking. Click on Check Now and follow the instructions given.
4) Defragment your C: drive. Done by accessing the same tab in the Properties window. Just follow the instructions in (3) but this time select Defragment Now. Pretty self explanatory.
5) Once Windows has done its defragging duties, reinstall the game.
6) Then patch it to the latest patch. At time of typing it is the 1.12a patch that can be found here.
7) Remember the copies of the saved games you made in step (1)? Copy them back into the place you took them out of in the first place. I.e C:\Program Files\Diablo II\saves.
If that isn't clear enough, or you fail to understand something, please post here and state your problem. We will do our best to help.

Double click on the Diablo folder. That should take you down into its sub-folders. One of those should be marked "saves." You'll want to highlight that folder, then Control+C to copy it, and go back to your desktop. Then Control+V to paste the folder onto your desktop. When you're successful, you should see the folder marked saves sitting there.thunder55 wrote:i have a stupid question when i go to the c folder i see Diablo11 ok then if i open the folder i see the save file is this the file i put on the desk top? then delete the entire diablo folder after that?

hi guys i finally got the game to work i went to desk top and right clicked on it and when i hit display properties i clicked on the advance and clicked on troubleshoot then i clicked on hardware accerlaerations and moved the slider until finally the game worked It took a few tries until it worked yet it did and i havent even been knocked off, i really dont need help with the folder anymore because my daughter is further along now then she was when i saved the folder. the probelm was that when i took the saved only folder not the whole diablo2 folder and put it back to the new diablo2 folder it said there is a folder already called saved would you like to replace it? i clicked yes and let the one on the desk top be put in the diablo folder but when she went back to the game there was none of her saved people so that is what i was talking about. but thanks anyway.
