can't defeat tanar'ri in sphere

Post by gojirasan »

I went into the sphere without a caster with the 'spell immunity' spell and no clerics with free action. Even if I did have a caster with free action I have the "free action does not protect against stun" option set in BG2tweaks because apparently David Gaider said that is how things were intended to be. I don't believe chaotic commands protects against stun, aka 'death gaze'. If you assume that free action is not available, then how do you fight against the tanar'ri? My whole party is just frozen and then killed before they really have a chance to do anything. My current party has Edwin at 11th level and that druid guy (can't remember his name) at 11th level and 4 multiplayered characters consisting of wizard slayer dualed to a mage at 5th level, a ranger at 9th level, a 10th level sorcerer, and a kensai.

It looks like I am going to have to go back to the start of the sphere and bring some spell immunity spells with me and maybe even allow free action to protect against stun and bring Viconia with me. I do have a berserker -> cleric in the sphere with me, but he hits L9 before the demon plane and duals over to a low level cleric. So enrage is not an option either. I guess I could bring minsc or korgan along for the ride though. It looks like the game might be basically unplayable without free action protecting against stun as Mr. Gaider originally intended. That is unfortunate.

I don't ever use magic immunity potions or scrolls because I think they are too cheesy. I would be open to using a freedom potion but I don't think it would really help.

If you have a save game before the sphere, then bring Korgan. Buff up as much as possible then send in Korgan alone, followed by your other tank(s) when the enemies are all distracted.

Alternatively use a lot of summons as extra targets and don't be shy on using Mirror Images/Stone/Iron Skins/PfMW as much as possible.

Have you checked ALL item options? Personally I forget very often that this item or that can cast something once a day and so on. I also assume you don't have the short sword that grants free action in your possession?

If all else fails, try the cheesy tactics of casting spells at an enemy that is out of sight - if you know where the tanarri is,you can not-quite-approach it and use area of effect spells to hit it - Holy Smites, Fireballs, Clouldkills... I know it's got Magic Reistance but not 100% so you might be able to do something that way. It's a cowardly, largely despised tactics that I use all the time  because I'm lousy at strategy and find some vanilla fights difficult on my 57901592th playthough :) If I want to be fair, roleplay-wise, I sometimes scout ahead with a hidden character, but the tanarri has true seeing, IIRC, so don't.

Can't think of anything else, I'm afraid.

Use potions of magic shielding if you have them, so all your saving throws are made automatically.

scrolls

there is always the "Protection against petrification" scroll/spell, as well as a few weapons that protect against stun :)

Edit: sorry, the PaP scroll doesn't protect from it... thought it did, but noo... Chaotic Command + Death Ward maybe? (or whazzname)
