Dusting off Morrowind
Dusting off Morrowind
While considering to start Risen and waiting for Diablo III (and after disappointment in Skyrim), I'm thinking about playing Morrowind again. I also have Tribunal & Bloodmoon. I got three questions:
1. Which mods do you recommend?
I'll go for a Unarmoured = Dodge mod (see character build later), a Magicka Regen one, and probably some sort of change to Alchemy. (i.e. Able to make Health & Mana potions with easily-obtainable ingredients from the start.)
I have no idea which technical enhancement mods there are, and which are good.
Keep in mind that I don't want to go overboard with the mods. (Not 30-40 mods, for example.)
2. Which questlines do you recommend?
Because earlier playthroughs of Morrowind mostly had me lose intrest because of the lack of focus, I now intend to focus on one House & one Guild, maybe the Legion or Temple too. Which ones? (Probably Mage Guild, given the build I intend.)
3. What do you think of this build?
Breton
Apprentice
Magic (Specialisation)
Majors: Minors:
Mysticism Longsword
Alteration Destruction
Heavy Armour Restoration
Block Illusion
Unarmoured Security?/Alchemy?
STR END
Yes, two armour types: a sin. I just want to play a partially armoured warrior, much like a Roman Legionnaire or a Hellenic Hoplite: heavily armoured upperbody, almost unarmoured legs. Probably just Torso & Shoulder armour, maybe Gauntlets. Hence the Unarmoured = Dodge idea.
Not sure about the weapontype either. I'm very much into Spears & Polearms, but a shield sure sounds attractive...
Is Destruction a good idea? My earlier forays mostly showed me that it was nearly impossible to reliably hit, let alone kill, with that.
Thanks in advance!

I have a very heavily modified version of Morrowind which I have simply copied to disk and copied from computer to computer. For reference, I tend to play stealth oriented characters, with a bit of magic and combat abilities on the side. In Morrowind, that usually means joining the Mages & thieves guilds, and the House Hlaalu, and focusing on light armour, short blades, marksmen, stealth, lock picking, and alteration.
Having that many magic skills could cause some weirdness in your levelling. Remember that mysticism, Alteration, and Illusion are primarily utility spells, so you may not want your character level to be tied too tightly to how often you cast water-breathing, for example. Unless you are planning to min/max, you are probably better off keeping your major & minor skills as either directly combat oriented, or things you can control directly like alchemy, armourer, and enchant. Similarly, unless you have a mod which affects the stats associated with skills, I'd recommend taking Luck as one of your stats. The extra 10 points will mean 10 fewer levels that you have to burn a level-up coin on the stat.
I'll assume that you have both Bloodmoon and Tribunal in your install. Many of these mods require them. Also, Better Bodies, Better Heads, and some form of high-res texture pack are pretty much de rigueur for a modern playthough. Depending on your monitor resolution, you may need to download and run a resolution hack. Finally, if you are installing from scratch, note that there are several free, official mods for the game on Bethesda's site, including one that enables area effects spells on arrows.
Mods I keep installed include :
Drug Realism - You can engage in trade while carrying moon sugar & skooma, but if you try to sell any drugs the merchant will call the guards and report the crime.
Giants - Lots of new creature types.
Haldenshore - Expands Seyda Neen into a small town, and adds a new thieves' guild, among other things.
Havish - Another town with quests, guilds, and shops.
Illuminated Order - New faction with lots of quests and dungeons, and you can become a lich at the end.
Juniper's Twin Lamps - Adds the twin lamps abolitionist movement as a faction you can join, with a bunch of quests.
Moon's Spawn - Extensive dwemer ruin built as a flying fortress. Eventually you can take it over as a mobile home.
Night-time Door Locks - Most shops and homes are now locked at night. More realistic, and more lock-picking practice.
The Goblin Lab - Multiple cities, quests, and even new magic effects in a new landmass.
Woodenfel - A High level adventure.
Also, while they are slightly exploitive, there are a few new races that I like, especially the Ayleid by Lochnarus, the Ice Sirens by Arkann, the Kheran from Westly, and the Night Lizards by Dale French.

Thanks, but I am anything but a Stealth-based player.
The Better Heads & Better Bodies are good calls, as are the high-res texture packs.
Since having too much to do was the reason I quit other times, I don't intend to install mods that expand on that.
I do tend to min-max all the way, so I did not really watch the governing attributes. I doubted about wether or not to take Illusion, but I wanted a means to turn invisible without Stealth. Maybe change it to Enchantment and make an item that allows me turn invisible? I suppose that if I'm not partaking in any Thieving-based guilds or houses, I won't be needing it much anyway.

You can see a comparison of some of the more popular texture replacer packs at Thepal's Amazing, Wonderful and Spectacular Morrowind Texture Pack Comparison Page . I think I'm using Vibrant Morrowind, although I might replace it with the one at [Relz] Hi-Res Texture packs and Normal Maps | Morroblivion: The Resurrection of Morrowind or the one it links to as a "better alternative" (use the Google docs mirror) for my next play through.

I have a question for you if that's okay. This is my first time on this website.I was actually looking for informaton for settings for Morrowind graphics extender.I want to play Morrowind for the first time and I have GOTY with a few mods and I seen your post about MSGO and I was wondering if you would recommend that for graphic mods for a first time player.I'm basically looking for graphic mods just to make it look a little better.GawainBS wrote:I got MSGO as one convenient package now. The difference is huge!

I can't speak for the sound overhaul (you do say you're just looking for a graphics mod), but the graphics extender (MGE) part of MSGO just doesn't detract from the game in any way. Even at its bare minimum settings it does much to improve your average FPS by enabling Direct3D support and such. At full settings and with the LOD distant lands enabled, I suppose you'll have a much better idea of where you are than in the original game. That can't really make the experience worse, IMHO.
Other than that, pick a nice texture pack. Though I don't really know what's new in that department anymore, Thepal's Amazing, Wonderful and Spectacular Morrowind Texture Pack Comparison Page, mentioned a few posts up in this thread by Lemmus, is a good place to start. Just keep in mind that the screenshots on that site probably weren't taken with MGE enabled. The end result in MGE will look different, but probably not worse.
