I've been playing BG (with ToSC) again this year, and I've always used NPCs that you can get fairly early (Minsc, Kagain, Viconia, etc...), so for the next playthrough I start up, I was wanting to use some characters that you can't get until later chapters. So I'll want to blaze through the first few chapters as fast as possible with as little xp as I can manage, so I can get them at lower levels.
My question is, how fast is it possible to reach Baldur's Gate? And how much xp will you have? Could a fighter get there before, say, level 5 (16,000 xp)?
Fastest you can reach Baldur's Gate?
You can get there immediately if you're prepared to use the console. Go to the Wyrm's crossing and use Ctrl+J to teleport across the bridge. It's not completely without risk, but as long as you limit yourself to just picking up the NPCs you want it should be OK.
