Sorceror Spell Selections

Post by Ulfgar Prigor »

Can anybody link me to a discussion of the best spells for a sorceror in IWD2 to take?

Failing that, I would welcome advice on these selections.

Current reportoire is

1 Magic Missile, Mage Armor, Chromatic Orb, Ray of Enfeeblement, and Grease
2 Melf's Acid Arrow, Snilloc's Snowball Swarm, Agannazar's Scorcher, and Mirror Image
3 Haste, Fireball, and Flame Arrow
4 Vitrolic Sphere and Stoneskin

I've just killed the Beastlord, and I've been level squatting. My sorceror will pick up at least five levels the next time I level up (from 9 to at least 14), and will add spells from 2nd to 7th level in one fell swoop. So I need to make a lot of right decisions.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

Some time ago, I saved a few notes about the sorc's spells. I'm not too sure, but I think they're actually from this forum.
Providing THE ultimate spell list is tricky, since in my experience spell selection depends quite a bit on one's playstyle and preferences.
That said, I never ran into any problems by roughly following the suggestions below.

Level 1:
Charm Person is a very effective spell in Chapter 1 and worth taking. Magic Missile is always a solid choice. Chromatic Orb is also a solid choice, cuz at mid to higher levels it can stun the target. Grease is a solid followup spell to Web.
Charm Person (really useful in Chapter 1)
Magic Missile
Chromatic Orb
Grease

Level 2:
Web is an uber-useful spell for immobilizing the enemy. MI is a nearly required mage defensive spell. Invis and MAA are useful selections.
Web
Mirror Image
Mels Acid Arrow
Invisibility

Level 3:
Attack Spells!!! Skull Trap is a great tactical nuke spell. The smaller (than Fireball) blast effect can be very useful in tighter quarters and if you go into HOF mode, it is more powerful the FB because it has no upper limit on damage. Fireball is a solid traditional blasting spell. Dispel Magic is always good to have around. It's also a good idea to have more than one party member that can cast it, just in case the other cannot cast it when needed.
Skull Trap
Fireball
Dispel Magic

Level 4:
Stoneskin is a solid buffing spells. The 2 emotion spells are also solid buffing spells. Ice Storm is a useful cold alternative to Fireball. ORS is very useful to take a really strong enemy out of a battle for a while so that you can clean up everything else *OR* it's great for casting on a damaged party member to protect them from harm when things look really bad.
Stoneskin
Emotion Hope
Emotion Courage
Otiluke's Resilient Sphere
Ice Storm

Level 5:
Animate Dead is almost a required selection. Cloudkill with Web or a stunning spell like Symbol of Hopelessness (later) is a great combo. And Animate Dead summons are immune to Cloudkill.
Animate Dead
Cloudkill

Level 6:
Chain Lightning is excellent. Disintegrate is OK, but no guarantee of success. Acid Fog is like cloudkill, a great spell to use with Web, etc. Acid Storm is more of a "fireball" spell, a single nasty attack rather than a multi-round persistant attack.
Chain Lightning
Disintegrate
Acid Fog
Acid Storm

Level 7:
Mord's Sword is uber-awesome. DBF is like a combo of Skull Trap and Fireball. FoD is OK.
Mordenkainen's Sword
Delayed Blast Fireball
Finger of Death

Level 8:
SoH is an uber-great stunning spell. Horrid Wilting is a great bombing spell. Firey Cloud is a solid "persistant" area effect attack.
Symbol of Hopelessness
Horrid Wilting
Firey Cloud

Level 9:
Mass Dominate is absolutely awesome. Take control of a number of enemies and make fight FOR you, not against you. Gate is nice, cuz it summons a powerful demon that kicks serious butt. But have your cleric cast a Protection from Evil Circle spell first so that the demon doesn't turn on you. I've never used WotB, but I've heard nothing but good things.
Mass Dominate
Gate
Wail of the Banshee

Hope this helps! :)
