The Secret World going free to play

Post by pug987 »

Not sure if this the correct section to post this. I just wanted to draw your attention to a piece of news. The site has covered TSW before so I thought you might be interested to know that there is a new video on the official TSW that strongly suggests that the game will go f2p soon, before the end of the year even.

It strongly suggests nothing. That video is clearly a big joke (and a really funny one at that). For all we know they could just be planning an extended free trial. Sort of like WoW and Warhammer have.

There's been no announcements made, and no hints thrown out, other then this one parody video spoof of the end of the world on December 21st.

So hold off on saying stuff like this until there's an official announcement made.

There are some things game companies joke about and some things they don't. Changing the subscription model of an mmo is a decision that impacts a company in a big way, stock values can rise and fall by such announcements. I highly doubt they would have let him joke about something so major.

It's not just the video. The text on the page that presents the video calls attention especially to the part about dropping subscriptions. If what they do make is an extended free trial then the wording, "relinquish the subscription requirement", is poor. Also it's not some random person on the video. It's the game director.

Anyway it seems whatever happens will happen by 21/12 so it's just a few short days till an official announcement.

Edit: It is now official, no more subscriptions, you have to buy the game though. Also they will charge you for new content patches but they are optional.

It's confirmed on the game's website: It's going to use the GW formula.

Yes. Subscribers get benefits, like reduction in the store, and free access to the expansion packs, though.
