Can't speak to Gloern in DS1

Replaying DS1 for the umptheenth time.

I just arrived at the Glitterdelve Mines, saw the cutscene, rushed over to Gloern. Problem is I can't talk to him. I haven't got an older savegame unfortunately.

Anybody know any tricks?
