How to stop the AI from cheating?

Post by Ribald »

Is there a tweak or a mod that will stop the AI in Icewind Dale II from cheating so much? I like to scout ahead with stealthed characters before moving forward, identify what enemies I have to fight and what I can avoid, split the party and lead enemies where I want them for tactical gameplay, etc. The way the AI cheats really disrupts this. There are an awful lot of enemies with dialogue, all of who auto-initiate conversation with stealthed characters and then attack them. Enemies who catch sight of one of my characters instantly know where every other member of my party is, even if they're on the other side of the map. It's frustrating.

I played ID1 "old school" style, no save-scumming, bringing in a new 1st level character to replace anyone who died, avoiding fights and sneaking past monsters to grab the treasure. It was a lot of fun. I've tried to do the same thing in ID2, but it's flatly impossible. It seems the only valid way to play is to confront the enemy head on, kill everything, rinse the place for treasure, and repeat until everything on the map is dead. For me personally that's not very fun.

If you are talking about the orc leader sometimes he has dialogue but you can still stay stealthed iirc. It does get a lot less of that later. I think spoiler (Sherincal) does that which might be annoying and some mage at the end of the spoiler(underdark), but I can't think of too many places like that. Test if you are in fact still stealthed, I think I was and my playthrough is only 1 month ago. Of course I am starting to be one of those old people who forget things, ha!
Right Speech has four aspects: 1. Not lying, but speaking the truth, 2. Avoiding rude and coarse words, but using gentle speech beneficial to the listener, 3. Not slandering, but promoting friendliness and unity, 4. Avoiding frivolous speech, but saying only what is appropriate and beneficial.

I'm not talking about just a couple enemies. It's every single enemy with dialogue. For example, at the ice fortress I got stopped by (SPOILER) two separate lots of rangers on the way in, some barbarians as soon as I entered, a two-bit undead lord, Sherincal, and a random priestess a couple rooms from the inner door, at which point I just gave up and quit. Not only was I definitely stealthed on every occasion, in some cases my entire party was magically invisible. I assumed it was normal, but maybe it's a bug?

No, no bug, the amount of auto-talk enemies is infuriating. It's even worse if you expend potions of invisibility, a relatively rare commodity in Icewind Dale.
