IS there an easy way to kill Umbra?? (spoilers)
i find it rather weird anyone finds her anywhere near a challange , i'd say either sneak up on her and shoot her with a bow , or just use a nice homemade poisen , i'd say a poisen with 3 dmg debuffs would do the work perfectly. ofc that'd require some skill in alchemy , but thats not much diffrent then lvling just any other skill in the game.

Any level umbra kill
I know the best way to kill her I did it at level 7 With NOTHING except shrouded hood Steel boods and blade of woe (i recently lost my shivering isles expansion so i have to play on original and most of my stuff was from the expansion)
As you enter the room Jump onto the fence (right side of the Gap) then jump to a The right corner there is a small Sticky out it. Then jump onto the pillars that are on the wall to the right, from here use any ranged attack to kill her(i used snowball took a few secs but eventually she died)

Like most others said, jump up on one of the walls and dish out spells at her. But do it quick, cuz she has a healing spell that she used in my battle with her and it made it SO much harder to kill her. Also, save before you attack her. I made the mistake of not doing so, but luckily the autosave saved when I entered the dungeon. If you have a paralyze spell use that and power attack her to the max (if you use a sword. If not just use on touch spells like Absorb Health. On touch spells cost less majicka, btw). If you have a command huminoid spell, use it on her and bring her to the imperial city so the guards can deal with her. Be careful with this though, the guards may attack you instead of her, so that might not be the best choice.
Good luck!
Good luck!

You don't need to activate the quest in order to kill Umbra. In fact you could look for her even at level 1, and if you are crafty enough, slay her and gain the Umbra sword and armor which is probably the most powerful set you will encounter for the first ten levels, maybe more. Which is why this thread was started off in the first place, I think.KingDingo72676 wrote:It's kinda funny you said you did this at lvl 10 since you can't start the quest until your lvl 20!!!

The easiest way to kill Umbra is as an Argonian with an invisibility spell or potion. Attack Umbra then run back to the gas trap, become invisible and wait for Umbra to lose interest and sheath her sword. Talk to Umbra to keep her in the gas trap until she dies. If you want to start the Dark Brotherhood quest with her make sure to finish her off yourself after the gas has softened her up. Cost, one invisibility potion, Umbra dead on level one. Non Argonians need enough health potions or spells to outlast Umbra.
Paralize Potions also help, as do damage potions.
Apostheosis Staff is good, if you can afford it.
"right...so she got the best sword right?"
No, Umbra's sword is far from the best. It does the most straight damage, and is zero weight if you don't finish the quest, but it only has a soul trap enchantment. Chillrend is an equally good sword, and with Sigil stones or the mages guild enchanted swords are much better than Umbra. Umbra is handy for killing creatures you summon to fill soul gems to keep your really good weapons charged.
"but i thought deadric armor is better then ebony?"
It is, and madness ore is better than deadric. Umbras armour is also very heavy for an early character. Knights of the nine armour is the best early on as it boosts restoration (and others) and the armour levels up with you.
Really the only reason to go after Umbra is to finish the associated quest.
jco4,
How do you outrun Umbra all the way to the imperial city on level one? She is quite quick, people trying this approach may want to consider a high athletic ability or potions to boost it.
"i find it rather weird anyone finds her anywhere near a challange "
Why? She has a powerful sword, heavy armour and she regenerates her health. At lower levels she is quite a challenge. Any first time player who stumbled onto Umbra would get a shock after dealing with bandits and rats.

I have to admit on my last play through I did just run to the imperial city and let the guards kill her, it's kind of a cheap trick but it works (especially if your a low level and limited on weapons and/or spells, to be able to actually fight her)
I tired many different techniques before that but, just couldn't seem to do enough damage to make an impact at my level with my weapons (and didn't think it was worth wanted til I was a higher level, as by then I can get better armor anyway)
on a future playthrough I'd like to try to actually fight her, maybe at a higher lvl or with better weapons

It's easy to exploit the game and beat her. There are a million loopholes, this is just one of them. Just make a Breton fighter, BUT specialize in willpower and endurance. Choose The Lord for a birthsign, which gives Blood of the North, the best healing spell vs magicka cost in the game. Because you are a Breton (I think Orc works out too) and because you specialized in willpower, your main speciality is now regenerating magicka really quickly.
Blood of the North is a 'minor' power, allowing you to re-use it an infinite amount of times every day (pretty 'major', if you ask me). You'll be able to go toe-to-toe with most enemies in the game, heal any damage they do to you and regenerate the required magicka before you run out of health again.
Oblivion, a good, balanced game? Naaah.
