Where should I begin?
Well, I started playing Icewind Dale II, for I had it laying around and had never actually installed it, and I noticed a problem right away: the game would glitch during character creation and close. Obviously, I was pissed. I reinstalled the game and it worked fine. Or so I thought...
The game was running fine until one day, I wanted to open up the inventory and switch the studded leather armor on my dwarven fighter to chainmail. All of a sudden, there was an error, and the game closed. So I used the "handy-dandy" internet to try and figure out just what the f*** was going on.
I learned that Icewind Dale II has more bugs than yesterday's road-kill, but that there was a patch for it. SO...I downloaded said patch and was able to play the game without any problems.
Unfortunately, just like the immortal words of 'Ponyboy' from the book, The Outsiders, nothing gold can stay. Yesterday, after returning from the <*spoiler*> orc-infested Goblin Fortress <*spoiler*>, I received my meager reward from Lord Cheap-ass of Targos. I gathered up supplies before talking to Oswald and beginning Chapter 2, but I didn't get any farther than that. Upon approaching Oswald, I moved my cursor over him and left-clicked him to start the dialog, when all of a sudden...nothing. The game is frozen. I tried exiting, and the only way is to restart your computer.
I have tried multiple times to initiate the dialog and begin Chapter 2, but I have been granted no such luck. I tried surfing the web for a solution as well, but I can't seem to find any accounts of this specific problem. Hopefully someone here can help me. I can't believe I didn't try writing all of this on Game Banshee right away. I use this site all the time, I just never actually registered. Well, I hope someone can help me by figuring out what the problem is/a solution. Thanks.

No, I did not find any answers on the forums so far...or anywhere for that matter!
I've no good answers for you..
I can suggest that it's a happy outcome however. ( ..err -what?)
A. I had this sort of thing happen to me at the last chapter (..and it would have been FAR better if I had it happen to me as early as it has for you).
B. The game is work, utterly repetitive, and frankly - most activities in life will be more rewarding than spending your time with this game.
So it may look like bad news.. but it's not.

I understand what you're saying, but it's still disappointing. I love playing these types of games, even if some are kinda old (like Baldur's Gate), and I hate to have this happen so early into a game. Even if I don't continue the game, I still wanna try and fix it, just so I can say that I gave it my best shot. Thanks for replying!

I remember having a similar problem when I reached Emma the druid who got her Moonblade stolen. In my case it was simple, the CD was damaged and I needed a new one or a digital copy (got the latter).
I can only advise you to either check your DvD carefully or try a reinstallation. The game itsef should run rather smoothlyin most cases.
