Fallout 3, how to spice things up, minor spoilers

Post by friendlyarm »

Greetings fellow vaultdwellers,

I consider starting fallout 3 again, but I don't know. The problems with the game, although I rather enjoyed it, are that every game plays almost the same, despite it being advertised as a sandbox game. You start out in the vault and after some moments of tediousness you escape, this is understandable, but then you have to go to Megaton to get things going, and that's the only logical thing to do, really. The first three hours or so are the same every game regardless. Then it's only a matter of preference in what order you do which quest, do you raid some raider camp for ammo, do the arefu quest, whatever, you end up doing them soon enough anyway. But after the initial playthrough I find it's really difficult to be inventive. A character based on personality and intellect for instance isn't an option in this game, you simply have to invest in combat skills. And not investing in science and lockpick is handicapping yourself in a boring way given the abundance of secret stashes. And since sneaking is so convenient, I invest in that too.

So the problem is that the character ends up being the same and quests are done more or less in the same order and fashion and that there are very little convincing alternatives to completing the quests. The question is, how do you spice up your fallout 3 experience? What do you do (or can do)differently? Have I only missed something or is it that there's really nothing of interest after one or two playthroughs?

Hopefully I've made my thoughts understandable, it is getting late over here.

Mods, mods and more mods is the only real way to spice it up.

Try FalloutNexus or planetfallout.

I heartily recommend Wanderer's Edition: http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/2761/? ~

It's a little tricky to install (read all the documentation), but it is worth it. Adds primary needs (eating, drinking, sleeping), and a lot of realism to the game. It shifts the focus of the game to real survival.

Ok, thanks for the replies. I will look into the mods. Do they work properly if fallout is installed in program files(x86)?

I'm pretty sure Wanders Edition doesn't work in Program Files. As for other mods.. it depends I guess. If they're small, it probably doesn't matter.

A bit different from what the others recommended, but what I recommend is having a permadeath playthrough, where your only saves are auto-saves in case the game crashes (which it unfortunately will, often). Combine that with FWE and Mart's Mutant Mod and you'll really feel like you live in a post-apocalyptic setting.
