MAGIC LICENCE
MAGIC LICENCE
Hi. Just started new playthrough of BG2. Last played it a few years ago. have a problem in that I paid for a magic licence from Corneil but I am still being attacked by the Cowled Wizards. Ruining the game. It's happening in multiplayer and single player. Has something changed since I played it last? Can't defeat the wizards I'm ashamed to say so do need help. Thanks.
Thankyou so much for replying! I am afraid I am going to show my ignorance in that I am just a casual gamer so can only say the version of the game is in a 4 in 1 boxset I bought after reading rave reviews about the game. I have not patched it but honestly have never patched it as I'm not sure how to- pathetic I know compared to people who post on here. I did though download part of the Collectors edition pack so I have Deidre in the back of Adventurers Mart. I did that because for the first time I am playing a Conjuror rather than a Paladin - and loving it- and wanted the Robe of Vecna. I am Neutral Good and will never be evil and got a reputstion point when I did the Circus Tent quest so they won't attack me on that score. I am happy to try a patch if there is a specific one, I'm just puzzled about this difficulty. I actually started a multiplayer with 2 of my own characers and got slaughtered by the Cowled Wizards even though I bought the licence, so started all over again in single player and the same thing happened. Can't get my head around it. Totally weird. Read hundreds of posts about how to get the licence even though I know I did it right. But hey you are trying to help. Game is great otherwise. Thanks again
Hello there,
Could you please describe what exactly are the steps you went through before this whole "Cowled Wizards" thing started happening?
Something like:
- finished starting dungeon
- finished the circus
- cast a spell outside and got the first warning regarding spellcasting
- went to Corneil and bought license
- cast spells outside and started getting attacked.
Some more questions that might help us understanding what happened:
Are you absolutely positive you have the 5000 gold needed for the license when you go to purchase it?
Have you checked before and after if the money actually gets removed from your inventory?
Are you sure it's because of the spellcasting or have you done anything that might have gotten the guards' attention? After the first few fights with the guards they start bringing out the "heavy artillery" in the form of Cowled Wizard Enforcers in addition to the normal melee guards.

Hi again. In both single and multiplayerI finished the dungeon, did the Circus tent and the slaver ship quests and Nalia's quest.I know there's no problem using magic inside or I think at Nalia's keep. In multiplayer I used magic missiles to help kill Corvhale and Bregg while I was wandering around and then got the licence. It said onscreen I had lost 5000 gold but I couldn't see a licence in my inventory. Next time I used magic outdoors in the City gates the Cowled wizards slaughtered me. When I statred from the beginning in single player, because I thought it must be a multiplayer bug, I did the 3 quests after the dungeon in a different order and bought the licence again with the same loss of 5000 gold but no licence in inventory. I was ok using magic outside at first when I killed a mage and bandits who waylaid me but when I cast Haste and Stonsekin to kill Del a bit later the wizards said I had unsanctioned use and slaughtered me again.
At that point I was about to give up with the weirdness of this but I have restarted and decide to ask for help on the forums. I have done all the same quests again, dear god, I could do them in my sleep now plus acorns at Windspear hills and killed the party in Den of 7 veils by drawing them out one by one. I am only ok because I have not used magic at all in the streets. I killed Corvhale etc and the mage party using my normal waepons. I will try and kill Del using Azuredge as she'll pop up soon I'm sure. I have not bought a licence yet but whan I get to stuff like the Fallen Paladins I think I'll need it. I would actually like it. I think I might cry this time if I get the same problem! (and not just because I'm a girl!) I did read if I do the Planar Quest I might get offerd one by the wizard at the end as I'm a conjuror so that's the plan. I've got loads of cash. Thankyou so much again.

Forgot to say my rep is very good. Got a point for the circus quest and one for freeing a child in the slaver ship. Haven't attacked anybody as I am miss goody two shoes. Have got Viconia at present but she really is pretty nasty but a good cleric and may have dropped a point there but still all good otherwise.
The Throne of Bhall english patch is here
Not sure where the patches for other languages are, Bioware aren't supporting it in any fashion evidently.
It looks like the global variable isn't being updated for some reason, I've never had this problem, or even heard of it before, if the patch doesn't work I don't know the solution. It might be fixable by using ShadowKeeper to set the global manually, but not sure which variable it is myself.
The short term solution is to switch off the party AI. Myself I just switch the AI the mage uses before entering outdoor city areas. Unless you are using a mod that changes outdoor encounters there aren't any terribly difficult outdoor encounters anyway, the hardest is probably the fallen paladin fight, just make sure your mage has stoneskin on before going to the bridge, equip with darts, stand back and act as missile support should do the trick.

PS The dirty fix is to use the console (see sepatate thread) hit pause when the Cowled Thugs start to appear and use Ctrl+Y to kill them off.

You're right, I know this is a problem that's not been raised, no refences to it anywhere on the net and I've played the game twice before and never come across it but I am so grateful for these really practical, workable suggestions.I will turn off the AI, look at the patch and as a last resort look at the console. I knew this was the best sort of place to get help! Many thanks. Really enjoying playing this character.
