Star Citizen - Roberts Space Industries

Post by Viperswhip »

Okay, I know they were more Adventure Game/Space Combat games, but for those of you who remember Wing Commander, Privateer and Freelancer, Chris Roberts is the guy that did those.

Well, a while ago they started raising money through various means (Kickstarter, etc.) to make Star Citizen, a huge game think, umm X3, but with other people I guess. I don't rightly think it qualifies as an MMO, since you really can just do your own thing, there is a single player campaign in the game after all, but there's more beyond that if you want.

Anyway, they just recently passed 18 million raised, the number of bonuses for being a backer are increasing at a vast rate.

This particular game maybe should be covered on GameBanshee, there will be more RPG elements to it than some of the RPGs that have come out lately. Tons of ship equipment and ships, and story with great writing and voice acting and a campaign and all that jazz.

I am fairly excited about it, the money they have raised has gone into moving them into a new development space, and improving their equipment and everything, it looks really fantastic. I don't know all the money other games have raised but I suspect that this one leaves them in the dust.

Take a look, I won't post a link but the title should get you there from Google.

I considered backing it on KS but didn't, as I'm not ultimately really a fan of space sims (only played Freelancer, which I kinda enjoyed, and a tiiiny bit of X3:Reunion, which confused me and I gave up fast).

However, you mention a 'story with great writing'. This could change my mind, but I don't really recall that axis from the KS pitch, except the part where there would be a 'real' solo campaign. Did they give concrete elements about storytelling ? Lore snippets, writer names, etc. ?

So far it does sound like an interesting game if you're in the target audience... just not sure I'm in.

I base the story with great writing on the fact that I loved the writing in Wing Commander, Privateer and Freelancer, and CR was at the helm for all of those. So, maybe this one will be crap, but I hold out hope, CR hasn't let me down yet, so I am thinking it will be good.

I played Freelancer again to refresh my memory, and while the writing itself didn't impress me more that it had the first time, I still had fun. I think I'll join in this for the sake of curiosity.

Next stretch goal 21 million, it's pretty crazy actually. They've raise basically 2.5 million in a month, well after the initial rush. Well, it should be good.

For Freelancer I guess I have fanwanked in the original intro which you can see on youtube, and connected it in my mind to the Wing Commander world, and I really liked Juni and King, you know, like companions, it was fun. There is also a guide to play through Freelancer on gamefaqs with specific goals to make it more interesting as you go along.

Well, they are now darn close to the 34 million. It's crazy. I guess everyone who will play the game will have pre ordered it.
