hm... i really couldn't get into fate of the dragon, it just kinda sucked. the sims, now that was annoyance to the Nth degree. everquest... the perfect love/hate relationship. i could never get into priviteer either.

now, the other end of the spectrum would be grim fandango... one of the greatest games i've ever played. oni rocks too, gotta love it.

the longest journey looks absolutely steller. i can't wait to finally break down and buy it, should be this xmas when i get around to it <chuckles>

Black and White was one of the few games I never finished because I was so disgusted with it. After a steep learning curve to train your creature, you were reduced to using it to continually do mind numbing tasks like collecting wood. The irony of supposedly being a god, but having to do any stupid thing your villagers wanted was also irritating. And the game had a signficant bug where you could not reverse a fatal curse on your creature at the end and so could not finish the game. At the point I stopped playing (about one month after it had been released) this had still not been addressed.

Myst was the first game I ever bought and, for me, it was a wonderful experience. The whole idea of exploring a deserted island and solving a mystery was both novel and interesting to me. This was not the case with the rest of the series. Recently my wife bought Exile for us to play together, and I have found it to be sterile and rather boring. I attribute this in part to having a great deal more experience with gaming and thus a higher level of expectation for my gaming experience. She made me promise not to play it without her. Not a problem. :D

I played The Longest Journey over the summer and loved it. For an adventure game, it dealt with some fairly mature themes and the main character was intriguing. It reminded me of my favorite adventure game, Noctropolis. I don't mind the linearity of such games: to me it is like reinacting a novel. I simply adjust my expectations. :)
Those who will play with kitties must expect to be scratched.

Myst sucks. I just don't find those little puzzles fun.

Longest Journey is great for an adventure game. No hack and slash, but a great story.

Other games I bought, but instantly didn't like:
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Shogun
Heroes of Might & Magic III
Final Fantasy VII
Gangsters II

Games I bought, enjoyed at first, then lost interest in after about a week:
The Sims
Black & White
Diablo II
IWD

Giants is really funny, almost funnier than the monkey Island games. However it can be very freeform at times, certainly not everyones cup of tea, i enjoyed it immensly though :)

Shogun i couldn't get on with at all for about 9 months then i pulled it out again and found out there is a really good and inovative game lurking underneath all that turnbased nonesene ;)

Maybe would have liked Giants, but I'm one of those percentage of people who get nauseated playing games where you move really fast in first-person view--can't play Quake at all without getting sick. I know a lot of people experience this--I think it has something to do with your forward vision telling you you're moving very fast, and your peripheral vision telling you you're not moving at all. My brain's reaction: time to puke.

Gangsters II was a big disappointment, agreed. They'd turned a game (Gangsters I) that had a bad interface, good AI and great non-linearity into a game with a very good interface and complete linearity. It was dull as hell.

I know some people like that, it is a shame, Giants really was good, you got to play as three different creatures, all with their own individual talents and frailties ;)

@Kid, why don't you care for Chessmaster? As chess games go, I think Chessmaster 8000 is about the best. It's colorful, it teaches chess well, it includes more than 50 opponents with different styles (a few of whom are even worse at chess than myself), it tracks your progress, and it offers dozens of different boards and piece types to play with it. Have I mentioned that the AI is fantastic?

I know it got rave reviews, a lot of people are fans. I guess that when it comes to strategy games, I prefer them in real time. Big fan of AoE and Starcraft.

I think the writing for Sierra's Betrayal at Antara may set an alltime low for the computer gaming industry. The idea behind it was that a Dynamix VP, who hated the designer of the original Betrayal at Krondor, thought programmers of BaK could do a successor by rote without a guiding creative talent. So the designer was fired (he works now doing some great stuff in kids software), and the programmers, who were good at programming but knew crap about writing (much less their native language), were put in charge.

What they produced was a much, much longer version of BaK, with characters who constantly contradicted their own personalities, and acted like whiney, immature programmers. The evil guys were obviously evil, but nobody around them could see that. It was so laughable that even some of the "critics" who laud every game that appears on the market couldn't resist putting in a reference to the bad writing, and the game sunk within a month or two.

I havn't read everything, but... Black and White!! It has only 5 (five!) levels, and is about 3 hours of gaming with practicly no replayabillity and VERY weak MultiPlayer. And this is without even mentioning all the bugs - B&W is the buggiest game I have ever played, and believe me I've played more than one game. The concept about a learning creature is nice, but your creature just can't develop in those 5 levels. Also the good&evil systems are really messed up.

Just my own opinion. If yours is different feel free to post it :p .
Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person. ~Chanak
