Journal of Gabriel, Child of Bhaal
Journal of Gabriel, Child of Bhaal
This is the story of my main character Gabriel, starting from scratch in BG1. I changed a few things that aren't normally possible, but that's just to add more depth.
Here we go...
"Nestled atop the cliffs that rise from the Sword Coast, the citadel of Candlekeep houses the finest and most comprehensive collection of writings on the face of Faerûn. It is an imposing fortress, kept in strict isolation from the intrigues that occasionally plague the rest of the Forgotten Realms. It is secluded, highly regimented, and it is home.
Within these hallowed halls of knowledge my story begins. I have spent most of my 20 years of life within this keep’s austere walls, under the tutelage of the sage Gorion. Acting as my father, he has raised me on a thousand tales of heroes and monsters, lovers and infidels, battles and tragedies. However, one story was always left untold: that of my true heritage. I have been told that I am an orphan, but my past is largely unknown.
Lately, Gorion has been growing distant from me, as if some grave matter ways heavily on his heart. I have asked about his concerns as gently as possible, but my queries have been in vain. My sole comfort is the knowledge that he is a wise man, and I know he will tell me when the time is right. Nonetheless, his silence is troubling and I cannot help but feel that something is terribly wrong…
Today, Gorion has appeared more agitated than ever, and now he has uncharacteristically interrupted my chores in the middle of the day. Imparting hurried instructions for me to equip myself for travel, he has handed me what gold he can spare, but has given no clue as to why. Nevertheless, I now stand before the Candlekeep Inn, ready to purchase what I need for an unplanned and unexpected journey.
I am Gabriel, and these are my journals."
To make things more clear, I will explain you "roleplayers" what Gabriel is all about. In your "roleplaying" language, he would be a fighter.
"Fighting... sometimes it is inevitable. "Sometimes" turned out to be most of my lifetime. I remember in my teenage years the Candlekeep guards showing an odd interest in me. Especially Hull claimed that I was destined to become a warrior. He was right, I knew then already. I felt this unknown power within me. I could not explain it, but it was there. As I grew up, I grew amazingly stronger, as if it were not my own strength increasing within me..."
Raised by the monks at Candlekeep, granting him a great common sense, Gabriel could have easily become a monk himself. Yet somehow, the steady life in a library didn't seem very appealing to him. Later he would find out that it was his hunger for battle that kept him from this.
Laws and authority have been an integral part in Gabriel's life, for the monks were very strict. If the youngster would interrupt the sages in their study, he would be severely punished. You "roleplayers" would say he's "true lawful", or "lawful neutral", whatever you call such a person.
Now we're at it, I could as good as well give you his "statistics"...

"It had been a rough journey... Gorion and me had travelled for about 8 hours straight, when my father suddenly stopped. I didn't know why, and apparently, neither did he. He told me there was something going on. I wanted to continue, get this over with, basically I just wanted to rest... But he asked me to wait. He wanted to tell me something; it seemed important. Of course, the curious boy I was, I wanted to know what.
Gorion, after gathering a bunch of twigs, sat down. He began murmuring some strange words, and suddenly the wood was lit. The old man opened his mouth, but no sound came forth. Instead he gasped: it was like he could breathe no more!
It took me only a second to find out. Behind my father, I heard sounds coming from the bushes. I grabbed my war hammer, my favoured weapon in combat, and stood up ready to face any threat, while looking down at the dying man. Out of the shadows, an impressive looking man, or should I say monster, pulled his sword. In his other hand, he tossed away the crossbow that had hit the old monk. He didn't say a thing, yet his eyes clearly revealed what he was thinking: I would be next.
A female figure appeared out of nothing, and, not unlike Gorion several moments before, started talking nonsense. "Save yourself!", the old man was crying with the last strength he possessed. Hearing the agonizing pain in his voice, I knew he was done for. Spell-like effects formed in the hands of the woman, and barely a second later, a bunch of skeletons was surrounding me! I knew how to handle such combat situations though. One solid blow broke the skull of the thing standing closest to me, as I dodged through their barrier. A few moments later, I was gone in the darkness..."

"I remember that night being cold. I was angry, although I had no idea with who. My father's killer was a complete stranger to me. What did he want? I could only guess...
I spent the next few days in the woods, running away from the place where it all had started. Somehow, I avoided the road. My personality changed a lot, those days in the wilds. I got obsessed with revenge. Gorion's murderer would die by my hands! The only problem was I had no idea where to start looking.
One evening I stumbled across a small encampment. There were a few men, and it seemed they were pretty drunk. Acting like a true animal, I crept close to them, and listened carefully to every single word they said. They were common robbers... but still I held some grudge against these strangers. The law wasn't there when me and my father were ambushed! Now these bandits would do such things again! I simply couldn't let that happen!
What happened that night is quite a blur now, yet I do remember savagely killing off the entire group... I wasn't beyond my senses, it was just something I felt I had to do...
By Lathander, what beast had I become?"
Well, roleplayers, it seems like you're still interested. As said, Gabriel changed a lot in those few days. His "lawful neutral alignment" changed into "chaotic neutral", obsessed with the thought of finding the man with the crossbow. Controlled by this obsession, he showed his anger to all people that might even be the last ones responsible for the sad happening, often leaving no witnesses.
His time in the woods, combined with his unstoppable bursts of anger, severely lowered his "charisma", to 9, you would say. He was more of an animal than a man now...
"Without a clue of where I was going, I just kept running. I only halted for hunting, to survive, and very little sleeping. After about two days I found myself on a road once more. A sudden fear went through my spine, until I realized that I was human. These roads would lead to civilization, something I had secretly longed for in my savage time.
Curious of where I would end up, I followed the path. Mere hours later, an imposing fortress appeared at the horizon. Once more, I began running.
Friendly Arm... That place will always be in my memories. Not only was it then that I realized I was meant for a life as a human, instead of one as a beast, but rather because it was where I met two people that would drastically change my life.
Upon entering the tavern, my eye fell on the female half-elf and her male companion, and she returned the gaze. Recognition sparkled in the woman's staring eyes, and she stood up.
Jaheira and Khalid, the two were called. They were friends of Gorion, and had seen me in Candlekeep some times before. After telling them what had occurred some nights before, I learned that they had just come back from Nashkel. There, the couple had been investigating the iron crisis that had terrorized the Sword Coast at that time. They had found out that a man named Mulahey was behind this trouble, yet also that there was a lot more to it.
Wanting to help me, they suggested that we make ourselves known in the city of Baldur's Gate. As well as I did, they knew very well that it would have been a worthless cause to try and find Gorion's murderer. If I wanted to get to him, I would have to let him come to me..."

Welcome, roleplayers. Let's cut to the chase and continue with our story, shall we?
"For the first time in more than a week, I slept in a bed. Though this didn't make me feel more comfortable. I had two companions that would help me through everything, but still I was afraid of my unknown enemy. Imagine, me, probably the strongest human in the region of Candlekeep, capable of killing a man with a single blow, afraid of a mortal being.
At that time, I somehow felt overconfident of myself. I was still so young... It must have been the unidentified power within me that gave me this feeling. If I had known then what was going on, I might have used it for my own profit, rather than letting it abuse me.
The next morning, I woke up after a night of good rest. When I got downstairs, Khalid and Jaheira were already there, waiting for me. We set off immediately. Outside, a band of four well-armed men glanced at me, then had a little private conversation, before they finally decided to approach us. I was suspicious from the moment I saw them, and it came as no surprise that they drew their weapons. My two new made friends had noticed it too, and were already preparing for combat. I was quite sure, however, that I would be able to take these guys on. Minutes later, our party stepped away from four corpses.
Suddenly a bald headed man rushed towards me. Thinking he was another member of the band we had just defeated, I grabbed my hammer once again. Khalid had already pulled his sword and flung himself at the charging brute. The giant had no problem dodging his dive, however. He halted and looked at the half-elf, confused about his actions. I could see that the man had no evil intentions, and I walked over to him, with a curious face. He noticed me and introduced himself.
Minsc, and Boo, as he called his miniature giant space hamster. The large man had a serious bruise on his head, which explained his lack of common sense. Nevertheless, Minsc seemed like a very interesting person...
In my life I have had some close friends. Every one of them had their own story and motives. Minsc was no exception. Recently, the ranger, as he claimed to be, had lost a fight against a clan of gnolls. In this fight, his ward Dynaheir was taken captive. Evidently, he was planning on rescuing her, but he knew he could not do it on his own.
Jaheira advised me to help the man. Not only did she suspect the gnolls to have something to do with the bandit affairs she and her husband were looking into, but also, if they would be able to take on an entire clan of gnolls, no doubt they would become famous in the big city.
I didn't even need to reconsider."

Yes, I am reading it. In fact I am glad to see that it did not disappeared with BGGungeon Tavern. KUTGW
But after more than an hour of intensive looking for the thread, I found it. Just typed some crazy numbers in the URL. Stumbled across some more weird posts, such as my nomination for coolest board member and the original "Brotherhood of the Ranger/Clerics" topic. Ah... other ones that asked me for advice about the ranger/cleric. I was popular... ::sniff::sniff::
But anyway, life goes on. You should've read this part already. There is more to come, trust me
I remember I tried to write something like that for my biography, but I made and continued the child of Bhaal story, like it continued on into Ice Wind Dale, and the same people had more adventures. When I bought IWD I created Minsc, Viconia etc. and continued the story using the same biographies for my PC. my bio wasn't as well written, but at least it had alot of action!

"Minsc guided the way to the spot of the gnoll incident. I felt secure with the strong ranger by my side. The four of us could easily handle any ambush we would encounter. And we encountered a lot of them… The trade routes seemed packed with bandits, it was like they were organized in some way. Jaheira’s feeling proved to be correct. On that journey, I got to know my three companions very well.
Minsc was a proud warrior from the lands of Rasheman, where he had been the protector of the witch Dynaheir.
Jaheira and Khalid were Harpers, a large organization with great influence. They told me that my foster father Gorion had also been a part of that group, and that it was there that they had gotten to know him. Both of them were half-elves, and very skilled in combat. Whereas Jaheira was more specialized in the druidic ways, Khalid was a master at arms. The female half-elf looked like a dominant figure, while her husband acted more as her servant. Somehow, I pitied the man…
And there was Boo. Boo was always very quiet, although his owner Minsc kept claiming it was the hamster that guided his actions. I’ll have to look into that some time…
As we neared our destination, the bandit raids increased. Some parties were even accompanied by hobgoblins, goblins, gnolls, and even ogres. Minsc got furious at the first sight of a gnoll. He took the creature out in a few blows of his large sword. The memory of his ward gave him the strength to take on the entire group himself. I might have been stronger than the giant, he was definitely more experienced. I was impressed.
One of the plentiful bands of robbers was busy fighting a sole man. He wore a bizarre green armour and struck with an enchanted sword. The bandits fell easily before this weapon. Although I had never really liked swords, I preferred a smithy’s hammer, with which I had been thoroughly trained during my life in Candlekeep, this shiny large sword somehow interested me.
“An enemy of an enemy is an ally!”, cried Khalid, before he drew his long sword and charged to assist the stranger. Minsc and Jaheira joined him, and I had no other choice left but to do the same.
Once we had brought the bandits down, the green man came to thank us. His name was Ajantis, a paladin in the service of the god Helm, and he had come to the Sword Coast to stop the recent robber raids. When my friends the Harpers replied that they had the same goal, the paladin insisted on helping out. Fascinated with the strange sword, and knowing that an extra warrior would never hurt, I offered him a position in my party."

“Like all sworn paladins, Ajantis was the total opposite of everything that is evil. He came from the lands of Amn, to the south of the Sword Coast. Apparently, a war was about to get started between Amn and Baldur’s Gate, and the Amnish rulers wished to know what was going on in the north. I thought it weird that the man seemed to believe in complete righteousness. Ajantis told me that he had been trained by an honoured Amnish paladin named Keldorn, and that it had been this particular man that had taught him all he knew, including his views concerning good and evil? When, during one of our many interesting discussions, I asked him about his weapon, he claimed that it was offered by him by the Noble Order of the Radiant Heart, when finishing his training.
It was called Carsomyr, which means Holy Avenger. It was a very potent sword, and I saw he felt proud that it was given to him in his quest to rid this region of evil. The paladin suspected the iron shortage, the cause of the upcoming war, to be affiliated with this organization of bandits.
The odd green armour he wore was supposed to be made from an ankheg, a savage mole-like beast with a shell even harder than steel. It was forged by an Amnish dwarven smith, and it definitely was a trophy to show a certain victory against a clan of these monsters, which was probably why Ajantis was trusted the task to travel to Baldur’s Gate.
Maybe it was fate, maybe it was just plain coincidence, but Ajantis would change my life in a way I never would have imagined possible…
Slowly I got more and more interested in my friend’s motives. After each time we talked, I tended more to the good ways of life. The paladin taught me that revenge was an evil thing. I started to believe him. Still, I could not follow the lawful aspect, as long as the score with my unknown nemesis hadn’t been settled.
Two days after we had met Ajantis, we encountered so many bandits that their encampment had to be very near. Minsc could feel Dynaheir nearby, and fastened his step in the direction of the gnolls’ scent…”

Nay... that weapon would be a bit too powerful in BG1. It already is in BG2, so imagine what it would be in BG1.Originally posted by Nick_Dude:
I never played the first BG, so can you please tell me: did Ajantis realy weild Carosmyr? the same That Firkraag dropped?
I'm changing some stuff to make the story more interesting. Otherwise, I would just be telling you the plot of BG1. Most of you already knew all of that, so it would be boring. Now I can give you something new.
Hope you like it.

Robin Hood
Centuries ago in England........It was an era of chivalry and magic. The evil Prince John unleashed an iron fist of tyranny upon the people. They called out for a champion.........one man answered that call. His name, was Robin Hood. Fearless in his quest for justice Robin Hood challenged the power of the high warlords. While protecting the helpless and the poor. Willing to face death for what he believed, along with the beautiful, lady warrior, Jaheira, the mighty Minsc, and the wise Keldorn.
