is there anyway to tell what time of day it is? (like morning, afternoon)

There is a "clock" showing sun, moon etc. in the bottom left corner of the screen. Image

I believe you can hold the curser over that too and it will give you the time.

Athkathla day-time is from around 7.00 something in the morning to around 9.00 something at night

and pressing tab will display it right away, otherwise there'll be a small delay.

although you can reduce (or increase) that delay in the game options.
