That seems to point up a significant difference between Europeans and Americans. A European says: "I can't understand this, what's wrong with me?" An American says: "I can't understand this, what's wrong with him?"

As far as I know from looking at the Forgotten Realms boxed set, the levels for Elminster and Volo are the exact same as in the games: Elminster is a 29th and Volo is a 5th level mage, respectively. I know "Terminsel" is a dual-class cleric/mage, but that's just Bioware wanting him to be an unstoppable spellcaster. I don't really think the real Elminster *needs* those cleric spells, but I don't think the game engine can reflect what Elminster can really do.
As for Volo, I think he manages to write his guidebooks by listening to a lot of gossip and doing a lot of travelling, mostly because if he keeps moving from place to place, it's hard for all the mages he's annoyed to find him and do nasty things to him.
