Ideal Proficency and such for.....

Post by Avellone Nam'akar »

What is the ideal proficency and weapon for a barbarian. Not being able to use platemail deals a big hit to a barbarians AC so i go for a good offense is a great defense.

also, how come i dont see any barbarians around here?

Because they suck!

Now to answer your question.
Best offense is a good defense? I think you mixed some things up there...
If you want a low AC, you'll have to use shields => sword & shield style
Since the best defense is a good offense, Crom Faeyr is probably the best weapon you can get. So invest some slots in war hammer.

(Half-orc) barbarians are probably the best pure fighters. I suggest using Celestial Fury + Flail of Ages (Dual Wield +++, Katana++, Flail++).

I agree with the pope using Crom faeyr, as you want to kill an enemy as fast as possible, not slowing him, but kill and move to next. But i think a shield would be needed, as some shields gives great AC bonus against missiles, which can be really annoying for a barbarian

A half-orc barbarian wielding Celestial Fury? What's next? A paladin with the Butter Knife of Balduran? Image

Babarians suck! You should be a beserker, just like me. Anyway, the best weapon proficency for a babarian is to spend points in 2 weapon style, long sword OR katana and war hammer.
The weapons you must use are the celestrial fury and the crom faeyr or the black razor and the crom faeyr. Well, that's what I would have done at least Image

I play my third game with an Evil Human Barbarian PC. I found him quite good, and wonder why anybody thinks Barbarians suck. They can have almost as low AC as a Fighter (there is a Chain Mail +5).

About the proficiencies: start with 3+ in Two Weapon Style, 2+ in Katanas and 1+ in Flails. At level 9 you get the second in Flails, later you can specialize with Warhammer. I use Flail of Ages and Celestial Fury, sometimes Defender of Easthaven. Crom Faeyr must be good, but only after Chapter 6.

There is not too much difference between a pure Berserker and a Barbarian (a dualed Berserker is of course a different matter).
It is a good idead to equip a strong shield against missiles (Fortress or Reflection) for specific battles (and/or use Cloak of Displacement/Boots of Avoidance).
The Crom Fayr is better against fighters and especially giants, FOA is better against spellcasters (see the weapon test threads) and is available much earlier.
A usual party has at least 2-3 warriors, so the proficiencies can be diveded. In my first party where the protagonist was a Half-Orc Barbarian (longsword/katana/flail); Anomen specialized mace/warhammer and Minsc specialized in 2handed weapons

I have a kensai with 3 slots used for long sword and 3 for 2-weapon combat (I'll get the long sword two 5 slots as soon as I have time). As weapons I use Blade of Roses and Arbane's sword, though I'll probably change them to Blackrazor and Equalizer as soon as i have time to play that much...

Crom faeyr isn't so useful for a barbarian, it is better to have the belt of frost giant strength and dual wield flail of the ages and defender of easthaven. When you activate you rage you get 25 strength this way. Barbarians do not suck. They are the strongest single class when it comes to melee. I would recommend dwarf because of the better saving throws and the ability to use the dwarven thrower.

Zaha; Why on earth are you using a Short Sword when your profiences are in Long Sword? Go get Daystar instead (you can grab it and run out if you prefer to save the lich for later).

Oops, I remembered them wrong. The swords are Blade of Roses and Namarra. I think I should go and get daystar for undead slaying tasks. Actually, it'd be good to have all the special long swords in the game to fight different enemies. Image (Sword of Flame to kill trolls, etc.)

Barbarians. I connect that word to big primitive weapons such as clubs (big clubs). Unfortunate the clubs in bg2 are neither big nor effective. I have never played a barb. Do they have weapon limitations? Try halberds, they are nice.
