Two questions about AD&D rules

Post by Vicsun »

1. What's the difference between a dual and a multiclass char?

2. How is dmg calculated. What does 3D6 dmg mean? I know the second number is the actual dmg dealt but what's the first one?

Tnx

I would answer your question if I could come up with a good answer...but seeing as though I can't I'll have to leave it to someone else to help you.......

A dual classed character started out as one class and then changed to another. She or he can not advance further in the class they switched form.

A multiclassed character belongs to two or three classes at the same time which are all active at once. The negative side of this is that experience gained are divided between the classes and thus slower advancement is the price to pay for versatility.

3d6 means "Three sixsided dice". 3 is the number of dice rolled, "d" means "dice" and 6 means the number of sides on the dice. Thus you can gain a random number between 3 and 18.

I think the difference between multi and dual is that with multi you play both classes at the same time. You start out as for example a fighter/thief. Dualling means that at some level you switch classes. (I could have mixed them up just now Image)

The damage is calculated in dice. The actual AD&D is played with dice of different sizes. You've got 6-sided dice, 4-sided, 12-sided, 10-sided and 20-sided dice. (I think that's about it) The d in 3d6 proabably stands for dice.
Anyway 3d6 means you give 3 times a roll of a 6-sided dice in damage. (you throw a four, that means 12 damage.) And I guess that armor-types have some influence on calculating the damage received, but I'm not that familliar with AD&D I just know what my halfbrother told me.

I always take an average of the damage to determine a weapon/spell's usefullness. For example 3D6: I think 3x3=9 and 3x4=12, so it does an average of 10-11 damage. Isn't that what everybody does, or am I just weird?
Dual-classing can only be done by humans, and multi-classing by nonhumans. The differences are mentioned above, but one should beware with multi-classing. It can really restrict how high you can level up in BG2, unlike BG1, due to the way the exp tables are designed.

Well, it does in that case Rapier. But for 2D12, 2 to 12 would give an average damage of 7, while it's actually 13. How did you figure out what weapons to use?

I don't know about that...through experience in playing Jaheira in BG1, she definitely gained more HP when her fighter class leveled up than when her druid class leveled up. I think it was 1d6 for fighter, and 1d4 for druid.

Magus - _2_d12 = _2_ 12 sided dice. So 1-12 + 1-12. Average on each die around 6.5 so 6.5 + 6.5 = 13.

The multiclass H.P. are determined as follows: Class leveled up in normal increase in H.P. (i.e.) 2nd to 3rd fighter = 1d10 + Constitution (say 8 + 5 {Half Orc/Dwarf con 19}) divided by number of multi classes (2 or 3 so 13/2 = 6.5 {2 not 3 for a half Orc/Dwarf}) ROUND DOWN therefore 6. Never less than one (even if rounding down would do so (hih mage level increase with 2 or 3 times multi). This is applied on every level increase. - Curdis

1=how many times you roll
d=dices
12=sides of the dice

So 1d12 would mean you could do damage between 1 and 12

Yes, I'm aware of that. Doing it the way he was doing it would give you 7. Doing it the right way gives you 13.
