I just got my Assassin skills back! Other reasons for going to 13 which I took into account is as an assassin you only get 15 to spend a level and you need to be good in open locks (to get the exps) find traps (to get the exps) pick pockets (because this is easily the best way to avoid playing accountants and actuaries A&A, insead of D&D), move silently & Hide in shadows (we are an assassin after all).

I now have 99 HP (gotta love find familiar) am a 13th lvl Assassin and a 14th lvl Mage. Avoiding opening chests (by busting them) and not going into trapped areas (during transition) meant that I spent the last session 'tying up loose ends' but at 2750 for most traps and 900 for most locks by the time I am finished this I will have an extra mage level. A bit of unsollicited advice for anyone who is going to dual to mage: Steal (or buy, yeah right) One of _every_ scroll available before you dual I thought I had 'done enough' but it is actually possible to go from lvl 1 to lvl 13 on scroll reading alone. - Curdis

Depends. Take a look at the manual and look for combinations of thief and fighter levels that add up to less than 3,000,000 exp.

Fighter 13/Thief 15 is one possibility.

After finishing BG2 with a party, I went back and created a F/T Elf and replayed BG1 solo. I got through without two much difficulty. I imported him into BG2 and things are a little harder (the arrows of detonation in BG1 were nice).

One semi-cheat strategy I've found is two go into stealth mode, get behind my opponent, then switch to my full plate armor before back-stabbing. You don't leave the shadows at once and have plenty of time to get that first attack in. Works well when attacking powerful monsters or small groups.

I just did the mind flayer dungeon and the beholder dungeon in the underdark soloing a 10 kensai and 23 mage. I gained two levels doing those dungeons alone (from 21 to 23). The only bad thing with soloing would be if you don't have a healing ability and slepp you only gain 1 hp per 8 hours of resting. I slept for 35 days once and that ain't a good thing. I knew I should have made my kensai at least lvl 14 as to have more weapon proficiencies. It doesn't really matter when you are a 23 mage though. All i have to do now is the drow city. I'l go do that now.
PS. vampires are no trouble going through with a kensai mage because Aran gives you that negative plane protection amulet, therefore they can't drain your level and they only do 1 to 4 hp of damage to you if they hit you Image Image Image

You should be able to heal completely in a single rest. One trick with sleeping to heal is to cast Draw Upon Holy Might first. If you have a decent Con and level this should take your Con to 20+ which will start you regenerating. Since the game doesn't check to get rid of the spell until after you are done resting you regenerate the whole time.

You'll lose your DUHM ability when you get to Spellhold, but by then you should have a regeneration item: Gaxx's ring, the Pearly Ioun, Ribald's Ring of Regeneration, or Dragonslayer, in a pinch you can use the Cloak of Sewers and sleep as a troll.

I have never been able to regenerate with "Draw upon holy might" - my base con is 19 (from BG1) - and with Draw... it would get to 22 - but, no regeneration.

It's pretty slow so normally you will only regenerate 1 or 2 hp during the duration of the spell...but it happens.

Regarding the post about switching armors. Usually I find it's better just to run away, re-stealth and come back for another backstab.
