How's the homework?
OK, so from what I gather, I a lot of you are either students or teachers, right? Post up your current assignment! I'd like to see some real puzzlers!
I'm in a design and manufacturing class, where we are dealing with manufacturing processes (rolling, forging, casting, etc). Homework problem #2 (due tomorrow) is:
Plot the force versus reduction in height curve in open die forging of a cylindrical, annealed copper specimen 1 inch in height and 1 inch in diameter, up to a reduction of 75% for three cases: 1) assuming no friction between the flat dies and the specimen; 2) assuming a friction coefficient (mu) = 0.2; and, 3) assuming mu = 0.3. Ignore barreling, and use average pressure formulas. I recommend using an Excel spreadsheet for this problem.
Yeah, and I recommend using large quantities of alcohol for this problem.
Let's hear your horror stories.

Fable, MrSleep and T'lainya were in a Pizzeria. They eat and drink.
The Bill! - Ask MrSleep.
25 dollars total. Fable give 10 dollars, MrSleep give 10 dollars and T'lainya give 10 dollars. The waiter take the 30 dollars(10+10+10) and after some minutes come with 5 dollars in notes of 1(the change). Fable take one dollar of the change, MrSleep and T'lainya did the same. And they leave the 2 dollars(rest of the 5) to the waiter. They left the pizzeria with the strange feeling of missing something.
Fable stop and think:
"We three in total give 30 dollars to the pizzeria
But I give 9 (10- 1 I take from the change)
MrSleep give 9
T'lainya give 9
3 x 9 = 27
27 plus 2 we give for the waiter 29
29! 29 isn't 30!
1 dollar is missing!"
Damn! one dollar is missing!

So, 27 (which all three contrib) - 25 (the Bill) = 2 (which went to the waiter)

Whoah! Volatile is right! "Land greed." Interesting term; it brings to mind the Nazi-era ideal of "Lebensraum" (living space) which was pursued in Poland. You can mention that in your paper, if you like.Originally posted by Word:

No, this way is not funny. Bad Maharlika!
They in total give 30, each of them give 9. 3x9=27 27+2(for the waiter)= 29

Sounds like some of you are in college. I envy you. Heres a few from my high school physics class:
1)Suppose that you were on a perfectly flat plain, with no obstructions. You drop a bullet and shoot one out of a gun, both of them starting their motion simultaniously and from the same hight. Which one hits the ground first?
2)Suppose a hypothetical monkey is hanging from a branch, and you know as soon as you shot your tranq dart at it it will let go of the branch. Where should you aim to hit the monkey.
Ugh. Maybe the challenge of this problem is supposed to be explaining it to the ones in the group who don't get it.

If I asked, would you answer? Its your problem. Its a deep, deep problem. I have no way to ask about that... I have no elegant way of stepping into your heart without tracking in filth. So I will wait. Someday, when you want to tell me, tell me then. -Bleach

For the monkey, shoot him wherever you want. He's gonna let go once hit.
Here's my homework.
If 9+10=19, then explain the historical importance of cheese as a literary device... Can anyone help?
Ehh, let me clarify, the gun in #1 was held perfectly horizontal, not verticle.

Validity as opposed to volatility?!
Bullets - both at the same time due to gravity (discounting air resistance/lift - but school teachers ain't going in to that level of detail).
My assignments:
1. Create an html page analysing UK transport statistics. (Done, phew!)
2. Create a document explaining Data Warehousing/Data mining (groupwork between 5 people - aaargh!!!).

Well let's see... I should be working on a 2000-3000 word essay on historiography, which I haven't chosen from the list of titles yet, but I may do "In what ways have gender historians sought to redefine 'womanhood'?"
I also have to choose a topic and write a bibliography of about 15 books in preparation for writing a 4000-word essay for my other course... Plus I have to write a seminar presentation for Monday on Christian magic in antiquity. Yep, it's gonna be a busy weekend...

Seriously though, the ACTUAL CASH OUT is 27 not 30
The +2 for the waiter should NOT be added to the 27. The +2 is ALREADY PART of the 27.
Admittedly though, the initial perception is the assumption that you previously mentioned.

Call me crazy, but won't they both drop at the same time? Whilst the fired bullet has a helluva lot more horizontal force acting on it, the vertical force is the same. I'm probably wrong...we only do physics for one semester in first year.

Yay! I learnt good!
Now I have to go study for my "oral radiology" exam, or as I prefer to call it "An exercise in how NOT to phrase a question".

@ Duramath - I am with you there, after doing engineering exams which you have to decipher the question I am still trying to work out why they make the questions so complicated!

My students have the following assignment:
1. Chose a problem/question with relevance to human neuroscience. Write a 3500-4000 word paper in the form of a scientific journal article for publication. Use the course literature, external literature and the science data bases (databases for scientific journal publications such as Medline). Present and defend your paper at a seminar.
2. Make a formal opposition of another student's paper at a seminar.
(My students are MSc and PhD students, so my aim with the assignment is to give they training in the important process of writing articles for publication, and presenting and defending your work.)
If they can't come up with a suitable subject, I have some topics they can choose from. Those include nice little questions like "What is the neurobiological base for consciousness". Hehe!
My own "assignement" is my PhD dissertation. I need minimum 5 articles plus the "coat". Of the 5 papers, at least 2 have to be published in the peer-reviewed scientific press, 2 has to be submitted to journals, and 1 can be in manuscript form (ie not sent in to a journal for publication yet. When I started, I was aiming for next year to finish, but since our lab was closed for over 10 monts (reopening this autumn) it will probably be delayed.
Currently, I'm working on a really heavy manuscript, aimed for publication in a top journal

Neuroscience is the vast area of anatomy, function, evolution and ultimately manipulation of the nervous system in all species. That means we could be dealing with motor functions in a lamprey, visual perception of a fly, or as I do, the human brain.Originally posted by Maharlika:
<STRONG>@CE: What's the difference between neuroscience and psychology?</STRONG>
Psychology is almost exlusively about humans, how and why we behave, think and feel. It's also a very large area, including function and development of the individual as well as relations and groups but also anatomy and biology of the human mind. What is commonly called "biologic psychology" and "neuropsychology" overlaps a lot with neuroscience.
