The first time through I played a standard party with one created character and all the rest npc's. I thought I had to save too often and refight battles too often so when I was done, I created this party in multiplayer and then imported them into a singleplayer save directory so I could play normally from the start. I've got the collectors edition with Throne of Bhall installed so there are more weapons and leveling up appears to be limitless. I have been doing every quest and have not been reloading if someone dies or something, I have used no cheats and modified no savegames. It is a lot more fun this way. All of my characters are in mid 20's level.
Paladin/Inquisitor- My best tank, with the Carsomyr and over 120 hitpoints he can take and deal massive damage. With and AC -6 and his immunity to a lot of magic this guy can walk right up to an enemy caster and start hacking.
Sorceror- Most powerful PURE caster in the game. If spells are chosen carefully she is unbeatable in a magic fight. With the help of the mage below the two of them can take out the defenses of any enemy mage in the game. Liches and Dragons are no longer a problem.
Monk- He starts out weak so keep him out of the tough fights early, but later on he becomes a ridiculously powerfull tank with some thief like skills. He gets so many attacks per round when hasted it is kind of unfair plus he has the lowest AC in the game at -11. He can make a decent scout as well, untill the thief gets up to strength.
Fighter/Druid- (Jaheira) I bring her along for her conversation, quests, and sex. Besides she was the most usefull of the NPC's provided. With the right weapons and armor she can become quite a fighter, and with her conjuring and insect swarm spells she's the best healer type in the game. No need for a cleric with her around.
Beserker/mage- Later in the game it becomes neccessary to have a second GOOD caster, and she fits the bill. She can back up the sorceror in a magic battle and also defend the sorceror from melees with her two weapon skills. In fact she could probably win the game solo.
Beserker/Thief- I love this guy, he is the best scout in the game bar none. He can take on some of the most powerfull critters himself with a backstab plus with his two weapon style he uses flail of ages and crom faeyr. If he gets into a jam while scouting, he can defend himself till the rest of the party gets there or he can run like hell with his boots of speed. His beserker ability also makes him immune most magic.
Below are the party stats and a list of some of the weapons and equipment they are using. If anyone has a suggestion for a new party member or something new to try, I will, cause I'm almost done with this party.

I don't understand why people take 6 people in a party - I find it annoying to shepherd the crowd around the areas, and 4 well-chosen characters are more than enough to make the game very easy. My last party consisted of a halfing F/T, Edwin, Korgan and Viconia, and they cruised through pretty much everything with very few deaths (think Vic bought it once or twice).
I was thinking of trying a bard, with Keldorn, Jan and Jaheira. I don't see how adding a 5th to this party significantly improves it.
I can understand wanting NPC's for the different interactions, but I find a full party annoying (and half the characters end up not doing much since the fights are over so fast).

I didn't build that ship for nothing!

In my opinion I prefere two mages(preferrably multi or dual class)
this is for primary magic stopping power.
Two fighters ranger or just pure fighter
My tanks
A cleric, for healing my members, protections and fighting the undead.
A fighter thief multiclass
For support and disarming traps, picpocketing, and setting traps.

I care not for endings or beginnings, but for the eternal and infinite spaces of the universe, and for the endless exploration of eternity, and mysteries which I will find plumbing the infinite depths.
"Do not turn inward to find peace and wisdom, turn outward instead to find liberation from the narrow boundaries of self", quote from Gary Paul Nabhan, paraphrased of course

Tips on living longer: eat right, exercise, and yes castrate yourself, eunuchs live longer then normal people.
