Toughest monster
Not including things like liches, dragons, and various quest specific enemies that you only fight once, what is the toughest creature-type in the game?
The "B" is for bargain

All golems are subject of MMM. The amount of damage one's dealing is not enough to make greater wolfwere suffer enough. Golems do not regenerate, for one thing, and larger ones do not fit in most of doors. So you might consider even to have rest out of sight of a wounded golem and return to matters latter (without leaving the area, of course, otherwise, IMO, it'd be just as new ). Should you mind to get rid of gereater wolfwere such way? And, even if you'd manage get off, it anyway should be unharmed on your return.

This is a hard one, because different classes have different strength and weaknesses.
But the adamantine golems are resistant to magic and can only be hurt by special weapons.
At the same time mindflayers can kill you with their special attacks.
For me i would say mindflayers, overall, but if you dont count classes adamantium golems would be the toughest.

Maybe, but if you kill mindflayers so easy you would kill most other things easy as well, right?
They are one of few things that can kill me, mostly because one can miss the intelligence drain and that my int isnt the best as a berzerkercleric(i need most other stats real high)

I would have to say GAUTH... The cause serious wound attacks are so fast! My monk got killed within seconds! The only easy way to kill them is to wear the cloak of mirror. I just stand there, and they get all their attacks back, which is really cool~
But definitely, without cloak of mirror, they are the toughest, I think.

I hate the average vampire when you are like level 9 and wandering athkatla at night, you get mauled by super fast vamps with NAMES and get level drained to boot its bad...
And if you really eat mindflayers for breakfast thats got to be bad for the digestion i mean all that tentacle must be like sushi only slimy.

For me the toughest battles - the ones requiring the most careful planning and preparation - are the ones where you face 2-3 beholders and a coupla gauths. I've never purchased the Shield of Balduran, though (seemed cheesy), and i refuse to put the cloak of mirroring on anyone but a mage.
If you don't agree, you should try out Xyx's smart beholders. Sorry i lost the link but I'm sure it's in an old thread somewhere here. But poke around...if you want a good fight Xyx's improved script is worth the effort.

Mind Flayers are not that tough, depending on the class of course. I have gone thru them with just one char 2 times - berserker and cavalier. All you really need to keep in check with them is your INT. Melee wise they are pathetic. So, get the Boots of Speed (quest, doable easily), also drink the Oil of Speed to get the top notch speed, stack the char with the Potion of Genius and-that-other-one (forgot the name) which adds +3 to INT and DEX. These stack. And then waltz in. Keep whacking them and checking your INT. If it gets close to 10, drink another potion, even both, that will boost the INT again. Done.
Adamantite Golems are pests, but subject to MMM. Shoot, cast, shoot, if run out of spells, rest, cast and shoot again. Keep in mind though these smaller golems, who do fit thru doorways and such. Clay Golems are pests, they like to Haste themselves..
Greater Werewolves or Greater Wolfweres are pests indeed, the regen.. They need to get a lot of damage and at once. Yoshi's snares do them in nicely, 5 snares killed one outright and almost killed the second. They still put up a good fight, as they regenned fast. So these are definately not easy. But, you don't meet them so much anyway so it's not a constant issue.
Beholder kin are not so bad, once you have the gear. Cloak of Mirroring is definately good thing, though it will be available much later. I personally use the cloak on the main char, as he's usually in front, gets spotted first and nuked as well first. Casters in my party do not get that cloak, they should even BE so close to the enemy that they would be spotted and nuked first. As for the Shield Of Balduran, then it's not cheesy. It's a useful in-game item, works specially against one type of monsters and also has a slight penalty. In my eyes it's far from being a "cheesy item". Without both of these though it will be tricky to fight the beholder kin.
Vampires are pests only as long as they can drain your levels. Once you get "past" that, be it a spell or the protective item, they are easy.
High lvl caster mobs are tad pesky, and only for 1 reason - Imprisonment. Other then that, they are not such a threat. Chop off their fingers and no more finger fiddling to get a spell off. Other then that, I don't mess with them. Males in dresses, bah. Real men wear platemail
