Dark Flame Discussion Thread II

Post by Gwalchmai »

Thantor once said, “I thought I would open a place where, for those who are interested, we could talk a bit about the Dark Flame story. Not so much about story ideas, since that could tend to ruin the spontaneity of the dynamic, but for things like the direction the story is going in, general observations, loose ends people would like to see tied up, etc.” He meant Dark Flame-oriented spam, pure and simple. ;) Since that topic was recently (prematurely) closed, it seems a second discussion thread is needed. Here it is. :D

This begs the question, “Who are The Order of the Dark Flame?” The answer to that lies within the many pages of five previous story threads, created through an amazing amalgam of writers and friends. This amalgam is in a constant state of flux, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the story someday took on a life of its own. In fact, even as I write, several new additions have come on the scene; whether they can survive the Dark Flames, only time will tell.

On that subject, I would like to reiterate something I had once said about the story:
We have gone to great pains to weave a rich tapestry, a history, a tall tale, set loosely in the world of Baldur’s Gate II and D&D. ‘Loosely’ being the key word here. We have a particular tone, a flavor, a voice, which combines some the best elements of personal fantasy, adventure, drama, romance, humor, and action. Often, the story becomes improbable and tongue-in-cheek. We also have an important background story that is unfolding in a kinetic or biological way (it has a life of its own)(but we often deviate). Consequently, I would now like to strongly suggest that new writers who wish to introduce new characters into our story should read as much of the previous story as they can stomach. The story started deep in the bowels of the great discussion thread of Anomen in the BGII forum, but really took shape in The Harem Tent here in SYM. The Order of the Dark Flame is 34 pages of pure story, and Order of the Dark Flame: The Adventures Continue should be required reading. The current story line may be found in The Order of the Dark Flame: Book 5.

We put our hearts and souls into much of this work, our families and work responsibilities have been neglected. Please read our work. You might enjoy it. You’ll also find that this isn’t your typical hack-and-slash, look-at-my-neat-armor-and-powerful-sword kind of story. We deal more in interpersonal relationships, gender issues, surprising situations, culinary delights, and explorations into the human (or demi-human) psyche. Serious drama, thrilling action, disparaging remarks, jabs, bad puns, and lame attempts at humor are par for the course, all in a light-hearted, fun way.
Many of the relationships between characters in the story are enriched by relationships between the writers that developed while posting on the SYM forum. New-comers are welcome, and we look forward to getting to know both the writers and their characters better. Please feel free to chat, either here, or elsewhere in SYM. :)

Now, did someone remember to grab all that booze from the other discussion thread? :D

Considering the effort I went to to find those links for the opening post, I was just too exhausted to move the liquor as well. :p

About my post: It's the best I could come up with, I'm lacking both time and inspiration. :(

@All new writers: Nice to meet you all :) And I agree with Gwalchmai, reading the previous threads is both great reading and necessary to understand everything that's happening.

@All old writers: nice battle.

@All: now let's use all that alcohol, we sure have enough. ;) :D

Hey DW, if you do that sort of thing, when pasting them all in documents, could you email me a copy? I want to read this, but don't have the time online to do so.

So here's a question for everyone: The dark Flames originally congregated in a tent (previously occupied by Djinn) in Trademeet, until a it was turned into a large crater during a battle with Waverly. We then moved on to the Keep, but winter is coming and the keep is rather drafty. Don't you think its about time we move? But where? ;)

Well...I'm certainly glad my character is NOT a dragon, since my secret would have been given completely away  :p

Welcome to all new writers! :) To echo Nippy, flesh blood is a good thing. :D

@Aegis
LOL! another Canuck in the DF, I'm not sure if I feel less lonely or worried! :D
No worries sending you the documents. I am not sure when I will be able to do this, my life is pretty hectic at the moment, but I will certainly pass along copies when I have the opportunity to do so.

Well I have to agree, I'm getting a little cold! :D :D

We can go to Calimshan or Trademeet, maybe Aegis can lead us to his home? ;)

I think you just did Nippy... :D

@DW: Whenever. I'm not gonna pressure or hound you for them. So, whenever you feel like working on them is fine. :) BTW, I think you should be a little of both. Worried that another Canuck has come to keep you company... :D

The only problem with this is we still have a cellar full of wine (unless you and Nippy managed to drink it dry on your binge! ;) )

So I would suggest we throw a huge party, as we cannot take it all with us - and take this opportunity to welcome our new comrades.

As to where we will go - well we have a journey ahead of us to the Shadowmaster's lair...that should keep us occupied for a little while :)

Ooh! We may move? :) *gets visions of a home with waterfalls and male slaves*

Okay, first, I'm getting very excited to see all the new posters!! :)

Second, IF we move, we may want to think about being driven forth in some huge battle. The keep is linked to the darkelf city after all :) Could bring both Der-draigen and Gandalfgal into our view (though I'm sure Der will just run away from after a view of Viv's might) ;) :p

Or, we may not want that, just an idea, among many others. There is the fact though that the Darkflames are linked to the keep, so to have it taken may not be so good, but would give us a reason to take on the shadow master. Anyway, ideas? thoughts?
