What's a Perfect Party Combo for ToB for each possible PC Class?

Post by Maharlika »

I'm very much interested in what you guys have to say about a perfect partycombo (using the diff NPC's available) depending on what class your PC is (I hope I can get a perfect list from Berserker down to Monk). Of course alignment can play a major factor here.

Thanks in advance for your inputs!

"Well now Mazzy, you're really asking me two questions here..." :D How on earth would it be possible to make such a list? The combinations are to many and will have to depend entirely on your playing style. Some people like brute force, others prefer subtle magic or stealth. Are you looking for an average party? How many priests/mages do you need? Do you use thief skills? Ranged weapons or mostly melee? If you want input, we need output.

Hmmm sorry about that... :o

Actually, I anticipated that there will be numerous possibilities...

As for my "output":

1. A party of six.
2. Just mention what kind of party this is as far as "style" (i.e., brute force, magic-heavy, stealth, plain balance, etc.), what your pc class is, and alignment.
3. I have no particular preference on what combo you would like to mention, perhaps to be more specific what would be your FAVORITE combo? That way, those who would want to share their inputs need not come up with a list. An input per person would be just fine.

Thanks Astafas for making me streamline my question.

Here's a goody-two-shoes party that I've been playing around with lately (I usually play chaotic types, so this is a change):

1. PC -- paladin (undead hunter)
2. Keldorn
3. Mazzy
4. Anomen
5. Aerie
6. Imoen

If you can suffer 4 paladin types in one party, it's interesting to role play.

Magic heavy party
designed for versatility and understanding of cleric spells and mage spells

sorc
aerie
jaheira
viccy
edwin
theif, jan (ugh) or imoen

assume TOB, as edwin will cause problems. Sorc and imoen can sub for edwin, I'd rather take a tank like minsc or savarok.

In SOA, korgan and aerie can't stay in same party.

fairly balanced leaning towards mele heavy.
this party works best w/ a pc thief (single, multi or dual)
pc ftr / thief multi.
saravok, lead tank, engine of destruction.
keldorn, also tanks, very good abilities.
anomen, healer + 3rd combat option.
imoen, archer, mage
cernd, don't laugh, he rocks in tob, was very impressed w/ the sheer # of druid spells he has vs jaheria + combat ability of greater werewolf.

this party is capable of cleaning out areas very quickly w/o need to rest often. drink heling potions or mass heal + go. most fights boil down to hack & slash, having half the party w/ greater w.wind is very helpfull.

another added benefit is most chars has their own seperate equipment and don't overlap.

IM ever so HO...

Some NPCs are more powerful than others, but that depends largely on whether you have ToB or not. If you do, multis are great, otherwise, duals and singles tend to be better. As ever, ToB or SoA, Your Mileage May Vary.

I cannot speak for ToB, but in SoA I find the spellcasters more powerful than the others. That does not mean it's easier to finish the game with a magic-heavy party, since you have to do much more thinking. If you like pressing the spacebar and pointing and clicking a lot, magic is for you. If you don't, get a good AI script and let your tanks bash everything in sight.

And, of course, I have yet to see someone post a party configuration that is universally considered a "bad" party.

The "Nature Lovers" party:

PC - single, multi, or dual class thief
Minsc
Valygar(sp?)
Jaheria
Cernd
Aerie

From a balance perspective, you are a little short on wizard spells (since you don't have a single class wizard), but have at least three clerics and three tanks.

For role-playing, IMO Aerie sort of fit in the group, since one would think a (formerly) winged elf would appreciate and want to protect nature. The only way I can see to justify a thief PC though is to play him as a stealthy scout and not the "typical" money lovin' thief.

I've actually messed around with the goody-two-shoes group Doltan mentions. I referred to them as the Holy Rollers. They were fun, but I got side-tracked.
You will run afoul of both a common misconception and a family of bears.

This is the party I've been playing with since the beginning of SoA thru ToB, and I think it works pretty well. It is a pretty balanced group IMO.

1. Krynus (PC) - Conjurer (Neutral Good)
2. Minsc
3. Jaheira
4. Jan
5. Nalia
6. Korgan

It overall is pretty balanced, with 2 tanks, 3 mages, a druid priest, and 2 thieves (tho Nalia isn't much of a thief, of course :D )

Of course, I'm sure that people won't agree with my choice of Jan... but I like him. I think he provides both good theiving/spell support, as well as comic relief (check out my nick for a classic example :D ). Of course, I might of chosed Aerie, but I accidentally killed her in the circus tent in Athkala (sp) :D

(Surprisingly, I have never heard Korgan complain and want to leave, even tho my reputation is 20 :D )
"Boo? Boo... where are you?"
"What's the matter, Minscy? Did you lose [snicker]... lose [giggle]... lose something?"
"You! The tiny, tricky gnome! Minsc knows it was you who stole Boo! You cannot fool Minsc! What is that bulge moving about within your trousers?"
"This bulge here? Why, that's [ha-ha] that's nothing. I'm just happy to see you Minscy. [giggle] Oh, those tiny feet tickle so."
"I hear Boo's frenzied squeaking! Ho-ho! He is growing angry, little man. Release Boo from your drawers lest his sharp teeth nibble on your naughty bits in his outrage!"
"Boo would never do such a thing... Uh, at least I hope he wouldn't. Actually, now that I think about it, that's a chance I'm not willing to take. Here you go Minscy - Boo's yours again, safe and sound."
"Ah, Minsc and Boo together again! Jan, you are not worthy of having a miniaturized giant space hamster scampering loose in your pants."
"Ah, I suppose there are precious few of us indeed who are truly worthy of that particular honor."

Here goes my monk one...
Monk: overpowered equipmentless character, very godspawnlike...
Minsc/Sarevok: main tank
Keldorn: also tank + great abilities
Jaheira: support tank or range, also support cleric.
Imoen: main mage & suficient thief, just great.
Aerie: pure spellpower & main healer/party booster.

A good, balanced party with good roleplay also...(good)
I am "the one", "the chosen"...

Well heres my paladin party

Lena (PC) Cavalier paladin- ooo yeah she can tank REAL good and cast cleric spells
Minsc- My other tank and cast spells
Aerie- Interesting mix of mage/cleric
Jaheria- Druid Spells mainly then i tank her
Jan/Imoen- I sue either, both are mages and both are thieves, really matters not to meand finally theres a PC Skald for his song and cuz hes part mage too

Id say thats pretty balanced, everyoen can cast some sort of spell, and thast what I always go for.
It's pretty easy, I mean just go kill a dragon, get laid.

Jan (major big-time kook)
Cernd (nature boy, kinda kooky/hippied out)
Aerie (just look at her face she's a kook)
Mazzy (halfling but thinks she a paladin-you make the call)
and for a PC? Has to be a Wild Mage!
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....

I've won the game with four different parties.

Try doing a search on "best party." I suspect you'll be busy for the next week reading everybody's input.

Might try the ***** patrol in SOA after i restart soa with a good bioware patch.

Me-sorc
aerie
jaheira
viccy
mazzie
imoen

Yep, I want all the girls!

I'm using a variant right not, with concurrent romance patch with savarok, better than mazzy as solo male and tank

Mazzy is too good a sniper anyway. I have savarok as master in crossbow now, tho,a nd plan on high mastery soon.

Hehehehe... Jaker-man... just loved that idea of your version of the Kook Corps! :D Probably try it later when I get back from work. Gotta need some laughs for a change... :p

Yeah, I think U-Unfrndly's version is quite a challenge... especially when you get to the final battle. Yeah, that party needs at least one tank.

Speedball's nature party is interesting in the role-playing sense... probably try that too.

Thanks, and keep'em coming!

mazzy will make a great tank, better than savarok at high levels. Just have entier party stand up in saradush walls and take potshots at fire giants. since this is such a pain, I gave everyone 5.5 million exp. at that point Mazzy becomes killer, and with a strength best she's better than saverok in every way.

First her grand mastery at shortbow allows you to use the killer shortbows from soa with incredible effectiveness. the tulgan shortbow with bracers of archery and the quiver of plenty allows her to weild essentially a submachine gun. Saverok needs a bit more proficiencies with crossbow to begin to match her.

She has higher dex than saverok, so she's got better ac with pkate. Finally, its a riot to see her with a two handed sword bigger than she is!!!

So if you decide to get mazzy start stocking up on two handed and halberd prof and see her shine.

I'm keeping saverok just for the plot line. I think mazzie has higher resistance to spells and better saving throws too. and her cheap paladin abilities is great. I'd rather take her than keldorn, quite frankly. I seriously think holy avenger is too over rated, and am looking foward to gram and ravager. also, saverok can wield soul reaver for a while, and that blade will play a pivotal role in defeating some monsters. whack a dragon with it with a greater whirlwind, and it wont be able to hit you with wing buffets and claw attacks. I don't know about breath weapons, but it should be affected too. For those situations where I am facing a mob of mid level monsters, have saverok activate greater whirlwind and use silver sword on most powerful enemies. I think the vorpal effect bypasses spell defenses, becasue I was screwing around, and he went through a stone skin cast by a 25th level sorc!!!

I know it won't work against a ultra high level boss, like demo gorgy and melissan, but the poison effect of gram should, and thi s is why flail of the ages and other effect weapons are so effective. unless a mage casts protection like elemental protection or prot from magic weapons, even if the stoneskin protects agaisnt the physical whack, the weapon spell effect gets thru!!!

this is why with greenstone amulet, or chaotic commands, saverok will be such a great mage killer. his vulnerability ot psi based magic is his biggest weakness. lilacor helps too.

OK, it's time for me to give a party combo, too. This party actually includes six NPCs. The idea here is to replace the NPC who has the class or function you desire with your own PC. My suggested party is somewhat heavy on the spell side but will still do great in "ordinary" combat. I've mixed the alignement as I've found that makes for more amusing interaction.

Anomen - Extremely good as a tank and cleric. Use spells that improves his fighting skills before larger fights. Make sure he passes his test and equip him with the Gauntlets of Dex as soon as possible. FoA or Crom Fayer and the Sling of Everard along with a shield.

Jaheira - Very nice multiclass. Will stand on her own in every fight and can add her druid spells to that. Compared to Cernd, her spells goes off faster since she doesn't have to shapeshift in battles. I recommend one of the many good spears and darts for her.

Mazzy - It's always nice to have a NPC with 3 attacks/round and whose attack always hit, even when it comes to Demi-liches and Adamantite Golems. A great fighter with some useful extra abilities, too. Any melee weapon but most importantly Tancheron's and later Gesen.

Jan - All the thief you'll ever need and comes ready to go with great gear and extra spell power. A dagger, staff or short sword together with the Light Crossbow of Speed, replaced later by Firetooth +4/+5.

Edwin - IMO, the best mage. All would at least have to agree that he is the mage with most spells - can go on for hours and hours. Equip him with the Staff of the Magi and the Boomerang/Firetooth Dagger.

The last NPC is a bit trickier. I'll give two alternative depending on your playing style:

Valygar - If you like backstabbing. Dual wielding Celestial Fury and the Corthala Family Blade.

Haer'Dalis - If you want even more spell power and an absolutely untouchable killer machine for those few very hard fights. Several nice harps in SoA and then the Enhanced Bard Song (!) in ToB. Dual wielding his two short swords or Celestial Fury and Dak'kon's Zerth Blade.

Okay for me.. the general rule is (in a party of 6) is to have :

2-3 fighters
1-2 mages
1-2 clerics
1 thief

Because of that... in a 'majority good' party, I'd pick: Mazzy and Anomen (who is a real good cleric as well)... Edwin (despite him being Evil, he's real good.. just dont get ur rep up too high! haha).. but if u dont want Edwin, get Aerie instead (who is a Cleric as well). And the thief would be Jan (or Imoen, later). Your PC player can be anyone (figher, thief, mage, shapeshifter; it doesnt really matter, as the 5 NPCs I've mentioned above covers all the 'criterias').

So, just to summarise:
Mazzy
Anomen
Aerie and/or Edwin
Jan and/or Imoen
* your PC character

Some may say that I'm missing out on the 'real tank' of the party (ie. something duelling 2 handed sword, etc etc).. well, that could be ur PC player.. OR , u could add Sarevok in ToB later in the game. Or ditch Anomen, and get Keldorn in the game. :)
