Newbie needs help!!
Ok just started playing this game, I like it so far but I have some questions.
Where the heck do I get some armor?
Are there any other places to buy stuff besides the merchants at the hive?
How do I distribute proficiency points?
How do I change my class?
Does reputation exist in this game? Can I just go on a killing spree?
How do I get out of the hive?
Where can I get an NPC to join my party?

Sorry Skeelo, but armor is insanely rare in Planescape and the Nameless One doesn't get any.Originally posted by Skeelo:

In other parts of Sigil there are more merchants with better stuff for sale. For now however, they're the best you've got.Are there any other places to buy stuff besides the merchants at the hive?
You gain points by training with certain warriors you meet in the game. How do I distribute proficiency points?
You'll meet some people who'll help you change class. See the walkthrough for their locations. How do I change my class?
Not reputation per se, but your alignment is effected by your actions. A killing spree would quickly make you Chaotic Evil (Unless that's what you're going for )Does reputation exist in this game? Can I
just go on a killing spree?
There are other parts of Sigil to explore in due time, but you don't leave the actual city itself for awhile. How do I get out of the hive?
Don't you have Morte? Go to the Smoldering Corpse bar in Southeast portion of the Hive. There you'll find a Githzerai named Dak'kon. He'll join the ranks.Where can I get an NPC to join my party?
P.S. How long have you been playing Torment? It sounds like you just started and haven't really explored or really tried the game out. Have some fun just walking around and soaking up the ambiance of your environment. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

When you go to the Smouldering Bar, be sure you don't linger. The SE portion of Sigil is covered with thugs of all varieties. Head as far south as you can once you enter the SE region, then quickly head east. Look for the Smouldering Bar entrance to the north of you. Pause the game as you glance around. Once in there, you'll find one patron who will join you.
That group of three will keep you going for some time.

Man no armor wtf! Yes I have recently started playing this game, trying to get the hang of it. I did change my class to a thief. It's kinda gay though because the Nameless One looks nothing like a thief, he's a big muscly burly guy! I just really don't like how you create your guy in the beginning. I really wish you got to chose your own Avatar. Not only does the body not fit the class but the portrait is the lamest thing I have ever seen. About the proficiency points....I trained with some thief guy, he changed my class to thief but I never got to distribute any points. Where in the Hive can I distribute points?

One of the better moments in Ultima VI had you meeting a man in the backroom of some den of iniquity. He was chubby, balding, and cheerful, and asked, "What can I do you for?" When you mentioned your contact, his eyes hardened, and it became clear that you were in the presence of the head of the thieves' guild....the Nameless One looks nothing like a thief, he's a big muscly burly guy!
The best thief is the one who would never be suspected of being a thief.
You also embody all the learning in three areas that you've had in previously lives; you just haven't recalled it all, yet. So you could end up knowing more about fighting, thievery, and/or magery than just about anyone else around you.
Agreed, the image of your character should change--not so much to reflect class, but to reflect changes in your charisma. Since specific mentions are made of healing some of the, shall we say, dermatological problems you have, I'd think that would show up on oyur portrait.

And Skeelo, if you're into weapons, you'll find plenty of 'em in P:T. Plus, you get to control a great thief (Annah), a fantastic warrior mage (Dak'kon), the ultimate ranged weapon user (Nordom), and a small but distinctive group of other NPCs.

Ok thanks guys. Still having a few problems. Where the hell do I rest!!!?! I'm currently heading into the catacombs, do I have to go all the way back up to the Flophouse to rest? It seems so difficult finding places to rest. Also, I still cannot get my proficiency points distributed. It says I have 3 unused slots. Fable I went to that guy you told me about and he trained me, but I never got to distribute any of my points. Where oh where do I get to do this? My thaco absolutely sucks!
Really wished I played this game before BG2. This game in some ways is a lot like BG2, and not like BG2 in a lot of ways. I miss a lot of the features that are in BG2 eg. AI scripts. My NPCs won't attack unless I tell them to, is there any way around this?

Skeelo, by proficiency points, I suspect you may mean statistics points. If you have three undistributed ones, when you make a level you should have four. Just click on the stats you want to raise at that time. (Personally, I suggest Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma, in that order of importance.)
Which catacombs do you mean, Skeelo?

@Skeelo:
Places where you can rest in the Hive:
NE quadrant:
Crypt (secret portal in Mortuary leads here)
Angyar's house - after you finish his quest
SW quadrant:
Office of Vermin & Disease Control (talk to the man inside and ask him the right question; he'll "put you to sleep" )
NW quadrant:
Flophouse
I'm currently playing BGII, and I miss the right-click menu from Torment. If you've got Morte in the party, take advantage of his Litany of Curses ability. I used it extensively on the street thugs, and on all the high-powered mages in the game. You can also improve it by selecting the right dialogue options with certain NPC's. It really pays to talk to everyone in this game.

There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...
What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

So I have to go all the way back up to the Flophouse?!! Man! I think I killed Angyar, is that bad? Why would you use Litany of Curses on thugs? I can see why you would use it on high powered mages, to make them attack and not cast spells. Where are some friggin monsters to fight in this game! I hope theres some in the catacombs cuz that's where I'm headed.
No, you can still sleep in the Crypt or the Office of Vermin & Disease Control (refer to my previous post).
Why use Litany of Curses on Thugs? To get them to attack Morte with their fists. Since they keep going hostile on you, this can save you on healing items. Don't worry, there are plenty of Monsters in this game. Have you run into any Cranium Rats, yet?

Sojourner I don't think you understand where I am...I'm under The hive, under village or whatever it's called. Means I have to go all the way through it and back up to the top to rest even if I do go to the Pest control. Not sure where this crypt place is you are talking about. Have run into some cranium rats, pretty nasty guys.

Sorry about the misunderstanding, I assumed you were still in the Hive. OK, in the Buried Village, you can rest at Marta's (the seamstress), and you should be able to rest in the Catacombs themselves.
The Crypt I was referring to is northwards of Angyar's house. If you go through the Secret Portal to exit the Mortuary, you end up here.
Proficiency points are gained as you level up, but you have to talk to the right person (and be the right class) to allocate them. For example, you have several weapon proficiency points you want to allocate. First, re-activate your fighter class. Then, go talk to Porphiron and have him train you in whatever proficiency you want to allocate.
He won't train you past specialized, but there are trainers later in the game who will.

Skeelo, I asked before about this--where are you, in the Catacombs? It's a very large place. Are you in that large area which contains the Weeping Stones? Or are you in one of the Crypts? Or the Dead Nations? Or the Drowned Nations? Or in the Catacombs beneath the Lower Ward, or the Clerk's Ward?

Go talk to Porphiron as a fighter, and have him train you in knives.

You'll get used to it when you get to know the nameles one,it's a pre set character and the story requires it or it would get to complicated. And please play the game b4 you ask questions that make no sense. These questions are solved after you play for like 3 hours.

That makes me so pissed off. You shouldn't become CE just for killing a few million people! If you killed them and then picked up all their gold and sold their knives, THEN you would change to CE, but since you just kill them, you should become CN (in other terms, "mad"). I'm a perfectionist, you see, and a conservative AD&D fanatic at that! Not reputation per se, but your alignment is effected by your actions. A killing spree would quickly make you Chaotic Evil (Unless that's what you're going for )
All that can go wrong, will, unless it doesn't, but then, it might anyway.
