I have finished both bg2 -soa and tob but i have never played BG1. Is it worth playing anyway?

Definetely worth it, but be warned, the game can get frustrating at tiem especially if you've played bg2 before it, because fighting some of the simplest enemies is tough in this game.
ex- ogres. they are realyl tough for a lv. 1-3 character.

BG1 is definatly worth it, even if it's just to learn how it all started.

What CRPGs have you already played? You may find P:T more to your liking, or the Fallout/Fallout2/Arcanum grouping. What sort of things did you find most attractive in BG2?
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

If you enjoyed BG2 for its setting and characters, then you'll like BG.

If you enjoyed BG2 for its variety of options in combat, or NPC interaction, then BG may not be for you.

Myself, I'm playing through the entire series again, and I can always find time for BG, but it's not as good as BG2 :)

I played BG2 first, then IWD, BG1, PS;T and last but not least ToB. I immensely enjoyed everyone of those games but while playing both IWD and BG1 I really wished I played BG2 last.
Still, yeah, BG1 was worth it.
