Just bought BG+TOSC

Post by cobra mkII »

I finished BG2 (never having played a AD&D game before) and decided to buy BG+TOSC.
Now before I start it,
are most of the PC characters from BG2 in this game?
Is it possible to be a Kensai Mage?
I played a straight fighter in BG2 and feel I missed out on dual classing and its opportunities.
Shd I have another dual class instead?
Any tips or pitfalls to avoid?
Is there a good thief or shd I dual class as this (My playing style tends to be ambush hit and leg it!)?
What weapons are best to be prof. in (ie short or long sword etc)?
Thats rather a lot of questions in one go hope you are all patient enough to read and help

The NPC you'll find in both BG1 & 2 are: Imoen, Jaheira, Minsk, Edwin (I might have missed someone). Imoen is thief and she'll join you quite soon, and you can dual her later as well, if you like.

There is no kit in BG1, so you can't have Kensai, or any other kits, like stalker, undead hunter, etc (except specialist mages). If you import your PC to BG2, you can choose the kit in the BG2(providing it's not multi-class). You can still be Fighter/Mage, of course.

I can't remember much about weapon at the moment. I hope someone will come to help you shortly. :)

PS. I personally like Long sword. In BG1, you can have less weapon types, so long swords includes bastards swords and two-handed swords (I think), bows include both long and short, and so on.

With Imoen you get a good thief right at the start, so no need for dualclassing here.

Concerning weapons..., if you want to play a fighter you should choose large swords, there is a lot of good ones in this game, much more than any other kind of weapon.

A bow might also be a good choice, depending on your race and dex you can get a really awsome thac0 rather early in the game. Very handy if you fight mages, and just what one needs for the hit and run tactic.

The best weapons in BG are the long swords IMO. There is also that good warhammer that you can get early from the evil cleric near Beregost. Other than that you can get some pretty good short and bastard swords
Helm sees all. Do not offend him in intent or in deed!

My favourite weapon in BG1 is Spider Bane, so I recommend Large Swords. :)

Bows are a must in BG1, since they are even more powerful than in BG2. ;)

woulda been REALLY intrigueing if I didn't know from the intro on BG2.

according to the pre-release BG2 FAQ though you cannot import characters from BG2.

Best weapons by far are "large swords", especially if you're going to kill Drizzt (which you should).
Best long range weapons are, of course, bows.

If you've been playing BGII you might have the inclination to rely to much on mages. Don't. One mage is sufficient. Best mage is Imoen if you dual-class her. Get another and better thief (there are at least two better).
