Unconventional locks

Post by MrMuscleHead »

In Baldur's Gate attempting to pick some locks results in the message "unconventional lock - may be warded against simple spells."

My every effort to pick, bash, or knock these locks have failed. What's the secret?

For these locks you either need a special key or somewhere is a switch/lever that needs to be pulled to open the lock.

Thanks! Hopefully I will be able to figure it out when I reach Chapter 7.

......Or you have to talk to someone.

such as the owner of the Merchants League to enter the Merchants Hall

Many of these kinds of locks in BG1 seem to serve no other purpose than to mystify you, particularly if they are on chests. I have used up tons of super-strength potions to break into some of the chests and such which are locked by "unconventional" locks only to find minor treasures or a couple of gold pieces. In BGII it does appear that most of them serve the purpose of keeping you out of an area or away from a certain item until you complete a quest, but in BGI they seem to very often be there for no reason.
