I dont get what you mean by mercenaries. But you mean when to export to BG2 i suppose. You can do it anytime, all you miss is perhaps some special ability. Just make sure you got all tomes.. However, to not finish the game would, at least i think, feel like something is missing. And you loose some hours of gameplay in a great game as well.
