Most Difficult to Use BG2 Party
Most Difficult to Use BG2 Party
I'm a sucker for lists, and I was wondering if people wanted to give their opinions on the following:
What would be the absolute worst, most difficult to use, party of 6 in BG2?
My vote would be:
1. PC Beastmaster
2. Minsc
3. Valygar
4. Mazzy
5. Korgan
6. Sarevok
Certainly a lack of thief, cleric, or mage makes this a difficult party combination. Are there ones that you think would be worse?

You've got too many good fighters in there. I'd suggest:
PC Beastmaster
Cernd
Mazzy
Anomen (failed test)
Jan
Aerie
Note that any of these characters are perfectly good on their own, in parties that can emphasize their strengths while minimizing their weakenesses. Taken together, I suspect they'd die before the end of SoA, much less furnish more than a mouthful to one of the larger bosses in ToB.

wow, fable set the bar pretty high, er low.
i'll try:
pc ftr / mage / thief
valygar
areie
cernd
jan
nalia
symbol stun is the real killer here, actually any spell that targets low hit point char's.
in hindsight this party is pretty stealthy, 4 char's can stealth, areie has sanctuary + mage spells, cernd will need some help.

I think that funny and weird:
PC- halfling barbarian
Aerie
Yan
Nalia
Anomen (failed test)
Sarevok (dual to mage at lvl. say 25)-to make sure he would not regain his fighter abilities.

I'm pretty sure that somewhere out there are people that think those three parties are the best.
The first party would depend heavily on Sarevok's ability to dual to Mage. Some tank lover will undoubtedly claim that this is a great party, but I vote for this one as well.
The second has some tanks, two Clerics, a Druid, a Thief and two half Mages. I'd almost call that a balanced party.
The third has decent spell support.
What if the protagonist is not restricted to a certain Kit, Class or whatever? Makes it even harder.

fable and koz-ivan: nice parties. Minus the PC, they actually look a lot like a party that I brought all the way through the game (the PC was a barbarian). But I'm no power-gamer and I agree that those parties emphasize the weakness in the NPCs.
Path of Wind: With your mage-focused party, the debate becomes which is worse, an all fighter party, an all mage party, or something else? For example:
1. PC thief (straight)
2. Yoshimo
3. Jan
4. Nalia
5. Imoen
6. Haer'Dalis
In a head to head battle, the all fighter team wins. But in some of the other battles of the game, I think the all mage team has an advantage.

As an interesting alternative, you could always edit the party NPC stats to make them challenging. Give Korgan a strength of 11, and don't let him wear any belts. Give Edwin an intelligence of 14, and take away his necklace. Lower Viconia's dexterity to 5, so she stumbles into arrows into avoiding them as if they weren't there.

Alright,
me sorc
aerie
jaheira
imoen
viccy
savarok
am I doomed?
No, becasue I plan to set suto pause off, andspend several hours near evvard in saradush walls pelting firegiants with unimited missile weapons.
8000xp per giant, no injuries, and approx 1 million exp per hour. Suddenly all these chars are really evil and great. aeerie can spell trigger dooms together, and multiple bolts of glory,
I have summon greaterh elemental and whirlwind for jaheira and viccy is now a spell powerhouse. no ironskin, but 4 armor of faith and her magic resistance is at 80%!
Savarok has 10 greater whirlwinds, and I've got his saving throes to +7, with 110% fire resist so I'll send him alone to face red dragons and when I cast incindiary clouds at mages he walks alone to them to use the silver sword with greater whirlwind. imoen is a great high level mage now, not that my uber sorc needs major backup, but in an emergency I can cst chain contingency project image and have 3 projected images with all her skills and spells intact. Demogorgy will never know what hit him...

They call me Darth...
Darth Gizka!
Muwahahahahhahahha!!!

Then what is the point? Name me the worst combination of five NPCs and I'll figure out what to do with them and what kind of protagonist to include. I am 100% convinced that there is no truly weak party.
Sure, if you give your protagonist the worst Kit ever, set all his stats to 3, and SK all your NPCs into Kobolds...

I have the same opinion: it's possible to complete BG2 with every possible party. I've soloed the game with mediocre PC classes and used bad party configurations, and still it is possible and usually easy if you know what you are doing.
The question about what is THE WORST combination that you could imagine (including a poorly chosen protagonist with mediocre stats) arises as a response to the following:
1. So many people ask what an effective party combination would be. To answer this, it would be nice if we could actually come up with a party combination that would be ineffective.
2. It's good to have a challenge and people are always trying to limit themselves in some way (no cheese, or no deaths/reloads, or maybe using poor NPCs) Fable, kok-ivan, and Path each came up with some tough ones that might be worth a try.
