O'm thinking of an fighter/mage, or fighter/thief.
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

A lot of people have played a solo game of BGI.
All classes are doable, but some are tougher than others.
And if you choose not to be a fightersort it'll also become a rather long game, as you only have one attack per round.
Some advice: Start out as some sort of fighter or a fightermulti.
Some say that the fighter/thief is the easiest to complete the game with.
Personally, I think the fighter/mage is a good start for you also, as it's not too difficult. Especially if you use the trick about putting your armor on after your spells are exhausted in battle.
Give it a go!

Soloing can be fun and even easy - depends on what you want out of it.
I solo'd a halfling thief very quickly - had less than 10 kills for the entire game. You can avoid most conflicts by hiding and running, and then backstab/run away from the few you really have to kill (Mulahey, Daevorn, etc.)
If you are trying to do every quest then a thief may not be the best option - I found it fun.

Soloing a fighter type is very easy in BG1. Don't worry about traps. You just step over them and take a hit. With 80-100 HP and a lot of potions you wouldn't even notice there even were traps. (Note, a few places, potions of magic shielding come in very handy)
And for the locks? 25 str will open them all.
(potion of Xgiant str and holy might)
In BGII it's even easier without a thief. They are almost completely redundant imo. The odd lock you can't bash with 25 str (potion of Xgiant str and holy might) cast knock if you're a mage or simple leave it be. I can only think of two places in SoA and ToB that can't be opened with 25 str (won't spoil though)
In SoA however, you do have to look out for the instant-kill spells if you solo (charm-spells, maze (grrr) comes to mind)

Stilgar has a big point - you can't carry squat. You learn to horde stuff (I dumped everything in a chest in the Friendly Arm Inn) and to ignore little stuff like rings, necklaces, magic stuff you know you don't need, etc. It helps to be familiar with the game so you know who has the really nifty gear for resale value - ring of holiness is worth about 5k gold - stuff like that. Honestly, you get so much money when you solo that you quickly get the things you really need and the rest becomes trash - why carry around a 50 gp gem when you have over 100k gold in your pocket?
