Interesting and Serious question.

I don't know why they had so many NPC's - consumer choice? What is *really* interesting though is the interactions of the specific combinations of NPC's (though, unlike BG2, they have little impact on the game). Go to Planetbaldursgate and dowload some of the walkthroughs - one details all the interactions.

E.G.
Viconia & Kivan - love/hate relationship
Eldoth, Skie & Garrick - love triangle!

There are stacks of NPC's to choose from. Although they aren't as colourful or as full of detail as in BG2, you at least get teh choice.

Gruntboy's notes on the NPC's:
Ajantis - Excellent if your not already a paladin (but take him anyway?)
Khalid - Not good but the only *Good* 5 star proficiency possible in the game.
Minsc - Excellent if you want Dynaheir/willing to have her killed.
Kivan - Excellent, plus he hates ogres.
Coran - Great but too late in the game.
Kagain - Great if you're evil (regenerates) Not many good axes though.
Montaron - Pants.
Shar-Teel - Great if your evil. Strong but poor HP.
Imoen - Great thief, plus can dual to mage (only NPC who can do this).
Alora - Pants.
Skie - Pants.
Garrick - Not bad if you want a bard (saves money/spells for IDing objects).
Safana - Good for an evil party thief.
Eldoth - Pants.
Yeslick - Great but too late in the game.
Jaheira - Great if you want to stick to the story/take Khalid.
Branwen - Good alternative to Jaheira.
Faldorn - Pants.
Viconia - Great evil priestess. Sexy too.
Tiax - Pants.
Dynaheir - Good with Minsc, the invoker is poor though.
Xan - Good higher level spells if you can live without fireball, BUT, there are plenty of wands of fire available.
Quayle - Pants.
Edwin - the choce for bad guys.
Xzar - Pants.

Of course, this all depends on the class of the PC. If your an evil mage, you may not want Edwin Image

When it comes to NPCs bigger is better but less is more. Remember an NPC in the hand is worth two in the bush, and two NPCs are better then one. Unless they see you sweat, then it's better to run away and live to fight another day. Of course if you give them a fish you'll feed them for a day. Teach them to fish and you'll feed them for a lifetime. Or until they cry wolf. Whichever comes first. Image Image

I've never seen so many proverbs in one go Image

Your a walking old wives tale Kayless Image

PS some of the "pants" NPC's actually have cool skills. They can summon dread wolves/ghasts etc

NPC in BGI were much better than the ones in BGII (exep for interactions, obviously..)
I liked a lot Kivan, Dynaer, Edwin (you can have him and Dynaer if you don't talk to edwin, go and free dynaer, go to naskell, talk to edwin....it's funny), Shar teel, keegain

A good thing i've tried was to dual Shar teel to thief. In this way i had a thief (with the stats i want) and also a good fighter....

I just finished playing through the entire BG/TOTSC/DSOTSC with an evil party consisting of:

Me: Neut Evil Thief/fighter
Edwin
Shar-teel
Xzar (had Monteron killed)
Kaigan (con of 22)
Viconia

I found the entire party to be really useful except maybe for Shar-teel. Giving a fighter a CON of 9 is ridiculous!!!!! Her whole purpose as a tank (in theory) is to absorb attacks while the mages and archer rain the enemy with heavy fire. I only used her as a backup tank because of this.
If you play DSOTSC you can probably use any NPC and make them God-like. Some of the items in that expansion are so powerful its not funny, especially for the Mage, Cleric, Druid (major power), Ranger, Paladin and even the Bard!
I suppose it could be considered a bit cheesy to use these but it is alot of fun too. Anyone who thinks Xzar is a crap NPC should witness how powerful he can become in DSOTSC.
With the equipment I got, my party could rival teams twice their level in BG2.

You guys have excellent parties, however i've noticed that having Shar-Teel in a party as the main fighter simply sucks. a CON of 9 for a "tank"?!?! If you're going to have her in your party, make sure to have backup fighter (CON 16+) you need the extra HP. I use Kivan, becuase he hates ogres and is very, very helpful in getting the girdle for unshey in the friendly arm inn.
