Who can use scrolls?

Post by fontaine »

Hi:
What do I do with all the scrolls that I have found?
The only 1 that I can use is "burning hands"

Who are they for?
Thanks

Did you read the manual?

The protective scrolls like "stone to flesh" or "protection from electricity" are usually green and can be used by anyone.
The rest are mage spells and can be used by mages and bards only.

Why you can use only "burning hands" I don't know. How many, and what scrolls did you find so far?

That's perhaps a reference to PnP games. Thiefs can't use scrolls in BG1, at least not in my game.

Who can use what scrolls:

Green Scrolls - useable by anyone
Scrolls with clerical spells - useable only by clerics, druids, and IIRC, paladins and rangers
Other Scrolls - useable only by mages

Interesting note (maybe), Mages dualled to another type (fighter for example) can cast spells from scrolls even while wearing armor... Just in case someone needed to know that.

Also, the spells (mage), and number at each level that a mage can memorize depends on intellegence and whether that mage has 'specialized'. (Again, just in case someone wanted to know.... :D

In 2nd edition AD&D, thieves can read magic scrolls at 9th or 10th level (I forget).

Yes, mages can dual and use wands & scrolls whilst wearing armour (but not memorised spells). This is an advantage of dualling. Supposedly, you cast at the level of your new class (not the mahge) but to no higher than level 10.
