Tips for planned elven ranger to take through series

Post by Nick »

Hey y'all
I'm going to start a game with an elven ranger (to be changed to archer in BG2) using bows and spears. Any tips were to gain levels early on, stratigies in battle,
NPC's to compliment him where to find decent weapons etc.
Many thanks for any help given.

Welcome to GameBanshee. :)

I don't think you have to play the game much differently just because your main guy is a Ranger. Simply pick the NPCs and equipment you like. The game is very playable any which way you go (though some ways are easier, of course). Once you get to BG2, it hardly matters what you did in BG1... You get to re-distribute your Ranger's skill points, so don't worry about that now.

If you want to make your character into a veritable demi-god, be sure to get all the stat-raising Tomes. Start out with Strength, Dex and Con 18, and end up with all three at 19. The other stats hardly matter in either of the games (they don't do much besides looking nice on your character sheet).

NPCs I considered useful (though only in BG1):
  • Minsc
  • Branwen
  • Kivan
  • Xan
  • Imoen! (dual to Mage at the right time)
Equipment that deserves special mention:
  • Bows (for those with low-average Strength)
  • Slings (for the strong)
  • Dagger of Venom

Easy XP... Hmm... You could cheese it. You could kill Firebead at the very start, get the XP, export your char, and do t again... But like I said, thats cheese... Although, he does put up a nice fight...

The only way to kill firebead is with an archer.

Minsc
Dynaheir
Branwen
Coran
Imoen

A decent party but you can use evil characters only if you keep your rep. under 18. Not that hard.

Other charactes
Kagain
Yeslick
Viconia
Edwin
Montaron

I'm going through BG1 with a Half-Elven Ranger.
The NPCs I've chosen to compliment her are Minsc, Imoen(left as a Thief), Dynaheir, Shar-Teel, and Viconia.

@Thorin My party's rep is 20. Shar-Teel and Viconia b!tch about the party's 'kindness' but they haven't yet tried to leave.

Shar-Teel left last night. Oh, well, she was just filler anyway. I didn't even have her carrying anything important.
