Need a little advise

Post by KaaZe »

Okay, I have just started my first run of BG1 and I have made a little mistake. I have not yet cleared the Iron mines and have just finished Minsc's quest. I have choosen not to keep him in my party. But the problem is that I have just dual classed Imoen to mage and forgetting that I may need someone to find traps for me.... SO... I need a theif. WHo should I get, im close to level 3 with my fighter and my party is:

Me<- Elven fighter who likes bow's
Jaheira + whiner
Imoen
Viconia (Not up for debate :D )

1 spot left for the theif..

Thanks for any help

Your choices are Coran, Safana, Alora and Skie. Everyone but Safana appears in Chapter 4 or later, so Safana is probably it. Or you could pick up Shar Teel and duel her to a thief. Shar Teel and Safana are on rather difficult screens though... IIRC Shar Teel is two screens east of Beregost with a bunch of basilisks and Safana is SW of High Hedge with a bunch of Sirines. You COULD just go invis and sneak to Safana and come back later to kill those Sirines when your more powerful. If you go straight north when you appear on Shar Teel's screen you can pick her up without disturbing the basilisks as well. Hopefully you're a MALE elven fighter, because she'll only join your group if a MALE beats her in a one on one duel.

Or you could run around some of the other "optional" screens until Imoen gets her thief skills back, but since I don't know when you duelled her or what her thief skills are at, she may not be enough thieving power to get you very far without a backup.

Unless you're going into Durlag's Tower, BG1 offers little danger in the form of traps. The outdoors areas are totally devoid of 'em, with the occasional Ettercap Web trap as an exception.

Just take your time for Imoen to regain her abilities. Should you run into some nasty traps (some of the dungeons come to mind), use the level 2 priest spell Detect Traps (which never fails) and have your Fighter trigger them. If you wear the Boots of Speed, you can outrun/dodge most of the Fireball and Lightning traps (which are the nastiest by far). The ones you can't avoid can be soaked by anyone with 30+ HPs.

Thanks alot guys!..

I have picked up Safana and completed her quest. The sirens arent that hard when you have a bow oriented character.. actually the best weapon against them are the arrow's they carry. The flesh golems made lite work of Khalid but I got them in the end. I really have to get use to bows being to powerfull, in BG2 they are good but a good sword is better.

Got a few more for ya!(Questions)

Should I dump Khalid for SharTeel?, is she better then him?, im alittle tired of him.

What are the penalties for have evil characters in the group, do they leave when rep reaches 18? like in BG2?. Does Viconia start a brawl with any of the "good" characters?

And I cant beleive I killed Edwin... that quest sure did back fire on me... damn!damn!damn!

Are there any bugs in BG1 with the gold?, I seem to be missing some and I havnt run into any theives as far as I know... but I could be wrong.

This game is starting to grow on me, I have had for some time, but damn is it hard in at the start... first game I played I was ambused by 5 bandits on my first travel to Friendly Arm in... OUCH. :p

Easier said than done. If you dismiss Khalid, Jaheira goes with him. The best way to get rid of him while keeping Jaheira is to let him solo a battle without his weapons and armor. Shar Teel is evil, so if you like a high reputation, she'll cause problems.

Yes, they'll leave when your rep gets too high. Viconia will come to blows with Ajantis (paladin), just like she does with Keldorn in BGII.

Some of those ambushes can be tough, esp. later in the game. At one point my party was actually ambushed by a group of worgs and a basilisk. Needless to say, we ran like h---.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Khalid = loser... There's no friendly way to put it. Nice way to lose him without Jaheira leaving as well is to park him inside some building where you will never be again, keep the rest of the party outside, then remove him. That way, he'll not be able to come up to you and take Jaheira along.

There is some special deal going on with Viconia. Your reputation is permanently lowered by two points as long as she is in the party. That means your max rep is 18. If I remember correctly, Evil characters don't leave at rep 18 yet, meaning that with Viconia in the party you won't have these problems.

Well, the only NPCs with decent stats are IMO Imoen and Kivan... Branwen, Minsc and Xan are not too shabby either.

Well, they are pretty much out of the picture for me. Its really strange playing BG1 after BG2, there are just soo many NPC in bg1, really hard to choose. But, its my first game... so I should make all the mistakes in the book :D
