The ads here are awful!

Post by Kevin Dorner »

Sorry, I know it's off-topic, but really... if I try to find the right forum I will be clicking a hundred more times. I like these forums very much. But I found it takes 26 clicks of "No" to cookies, "No" to Active-X controls and closing popup windows every time a page is redrawn!

Running Internet Explorer, with all the patches, and it has crashed on me three times in half an hour because of these ads!

I don't think I will be returning very much if they stay that way. I realize that these forums need a source of revenue, but when it takes ten minutes to do two simple corrections on a post because four popup windows and over a hundred cookies arrived and IE crashed twice, it's a little inconvenient. IE has never crashed on me for over a month that I have been using it since I switched from Netscape (due to Netscape's bug with Javascript processes making it useless for UBB forums.)

I never get any ads or pop-ups or anything like that. WTF? All I have to say on this subject is "do as Lord Dorner commands, lest he abandon us the the whims of the bugs!"
When logic and proportion,
Have fallen sloppy dead,
And the White Knight is talking backwards,
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the doormouse said.

As for the number of cookies and ActiveX controls I do not know,(my firewall accepts cookies from GB) I know the password is stored in a cookie.

As for IE problems - well I have no problems with IE 5.5. SP2 wich I belive to be the latest - so maybe the problems is elsewhere in your IE.

As for Pop-up, Buck has just added some pop-up adds to create renvue as to not closing the site. The number of pop-up you get could be connected to the cookies, because it should be so that the pop-up are on a time cycle (IIRC) so getting one ei. every 4/5 hour (or something).

We have to endure something, to keep this site open - if it is to be a free site.

IE 6.0 is now available at microsoft's web site.

Have you set the option for each cookie to be displayed and accepted or denied by the user. Just curious.

Personally, I haven't had too many problems with pop up windows or cookies on this site.

How odd... I get a single pop-under when I first enter GB, but nothing after that. I have a firewall but allow cookies, and am prompted before ActiveX is installed.

Thanks for the feedback. I hope I didn't sound angry at Gamebanshee; more at the advertisers who have to be as intrusive as possible.

I know the cause of this now: at work my browser (NS 4.6) accepts cookies, but at home I refuse cookies and Active-X controls (as the latter can be malicious.) Because the ads are not able to set their cookies, they try over and over and reopen the same popup indefinitely. When I tried it here the popup only opened once and when I closed it it didn't reopen when I redrew the frame.

You could also browse using www.safeweb.com

This opens up a window in your existing window, in which pop-ups, cookies, etc. can be 100% disallowed if you want (hit configure option, then refresh).

Also makes your browsing somewhat untraceable, if such a thing is desired.

The pop-ups we use here at GB run on a 12 hour cycle. 1/12. Not bad if you think about it. Try not to use ad killers =P They tend to not even let the pop-up open and thus lowering the revenue from them :x

Boy do we need revenue..
