Solar troubles (final encounter spoiler)

Post by Bernie »

Hi there,

after killing all those bhaalspawns I'm now finally standing in front of Melissan, ready to give her some beating. I was not sure what to expect but so far Melissan herself turned out to be manageable.

The major problem for me is the third essence pool, or to be more exact, the pets guarding it. You know I'm speaking about the Solar, Mariliths and Alu fiend here.

I have no idea how to beat those. Everything I summon is either killed or charmed in seconds, magic does nothing, the Mariliths are immune to everything and the Alu-fiend sooner or later charms 1 or 2 of my party members.

I tried it with different approaches 10 times or so and finally left the game frustrated.

As I didn't find an entry in this forum dealing especially with this encounter, I thought I'd try it and ask :)

Thanks in advance for any hints

What kind of party do you have?

If you can get some charm immunities, things get easier. The Helm of Charm Protection, Shield of Harmony and Chaotic Commands spells will help here.

I bet those demons are not immune to a solid beating. ;) Good, raw melee power should do the trick against just about any creature in the game.

Do you have Vhailor's Helm? The Simulacrum can kick a$$ and use Scrolls of Protection from Magic (read: charm and fear, in this case) without permanently expending them.

My party consists of

Magekiller (myself)
Korgan
Jaheira
Viconia
Jan
Edwin

Problem with the Mariliths is that they are indeed immune to solid beating as they cast protection vs magic weapons immediately.

Sadly, I don't have Vhailors helm (isn't this a collectors edition only item?), but I'll give chaotic commands a try.

Good ways to deal with Protection from Magical Weapons are either having Edwin cast Breach (best way) or Remove Magic, waiting 4 rounds (only if they don't continually re-cast) or having Vicky cast Dispel Magic.

As a last resort, kill off all your party members that you cannot make immune to the charm yourself. Resurrect them after the Alu-Fiends are dead.

Bernie, you really need to note that it's an *END* of game spoiler, because when people see Solar, they're thinking the one that pulls you back to the Pocket Plane to talk to you.

As it is people are having the last baddie spoiled.

Send in a mage with spelltrap, and stoneskin. CC 3 mordekaines and go in. Immediately cast timestop followed by imroved alacrity. If you got this far you have already won, the swords were there only to buy you some time.
