Tough theif decision.

Post by Disco Stew »

I don't want to play a theif on my next run through the bg series.

1) In your opinion, is a theif that necessary?(I've never been through without one in my party)

2)Should I take Edwin, or should I take Imoen/Nalia/Jan instead so I'll have a theif?

Thanks.

Two things. You`ll have to suck up all the trap effects and you`ll have a pretty hard time opening locks untill u get Crom...
I am "the one", "the chosen"...

I've been trying to replay BG2 and ToB without a thief, but I found it so irritating so I gave up and multiclassed Viconia to cleric/thief with Shadowkeeper.

I usually rest very seldom, so my mage and cleric run out of find trap and open lock-spells quite quickly in some areas. However, it you like to rest often when you play, you would probably have less problems than I had.

While not necessary, they're certainly useful.
Remember, taking Edwin does not necessarily mean leaving Imoen out. My current party is a CG Swashbuckler (yeah yeah theif), Korgan, Jaheira, Viconia, Imoen, and Edwin. That gives me 3 true tanks, 1 and a half clerics, and 3 mages (Edwin counts for two :-) ). It would work just as well with Jan instead of Imoen or a paladin or something rahter than the swashbuckler.
However, I would advise you NOT (i repeat NOT) to take Nalia as a dedicated theif, she's just not that good.

Mages are decent Thief substitutes. Knock opens any pickable lock in the game, and (Minor) Spell Deflection/Turning/Trap protect against the insta-kill traps. Staff of the Magi is especially servicable in this regard, since its Spell Trap lasts for 8 hours.

I also play a thief and find them a very useful charcter. I would like to know how much exp is out there if you were to disable all the traps. It must be alot. Just for that reason I like to keep one around me or another npc thief. Not the toughest kit around but they can do so many cool things.

Personally, I think thieves are a must, they make the game so much easier. It is doable without one, but they are pretty much a requisite. Of the thieves in the game, I think yoshi was the best

Of course you should have a thief - that's how the game is supposed to be played. Go for Jan, or, go for both Jan and Edwin and throw someone else out of your party.

There's nothing in the game (to my knowledge) that a thief is needed for but they could be fun to play.

I now play a solo Druid and I deal with traps by simply soaking up the damage. Greater Werewolf + draw upon holy might gives 25 Str so I just break the locks.

Jan is good.. er.. ditch Nalia for sure.. I dont even SEE the point of making her a level 4 thief!!! haha.. totally pointless, and it's not like Nalia has any good attributes to her or any good quests.. grrr

It adds a bit of depth to her character... Haer'Dalis being a Tiefling is equally "pointless". ;)
