i am half way through chap 9.
my character is a elven mage/thief.
should i make him wear
the robe of vecna + ring of protection +2
or
the improved bladeslinger elven chain +5 (you know the one which is immune to normal weopons) and another ring.

I agree if you don't have any other mages you've got to have the robe of vecna- the casting speed bonus is the best thing ever. Just look at all the spells that have a casting time of 5 or less: you put on that robe and the amulet of power, cast improved alacrity and run through your entire memorized spell list before your enemy can take 5 steps!
BTW, I question the point of improving the bladesinger chain - it costs 40,000 gold to go up one AC point and get immunity to normal weapons, well there ARE no normal weapons in TOB even the grunt guards have +1 longswords, besides your main character could very well be immune anyway from hell - so you're paying 40,000 Gold for 1 AC point! I guess if you can't think of anything else to spend it on you could do it, but it seems kinda pricey to me.

May you walk on warrrrm sannd....
currently i have imeon wearing the improved bladeslinger chain. i have dex 19.
my equipment is
robe of venca,
amulet of power, (think of changing to the one which gives you +3 ac bonus)
vailour helm (the one which gives you a +1 bonus and sircumlum)
clock of mirroring
ring of gaxx
ring of protection +2
boots of speed
belt of inerital barrier (the one which gives you 25% magic resitance)
weopons either
blackrazor, answerer, crom fayer, rune hammer +5.
which gives me -6 ac or -8 when single handed.
my party is of me and saveok. so i am sort of the main fighter with saverok. i have a small party of me, jaheria, imeon and saveok only. i have collected all from soa but ain't done watchers keep yet.

You're probably better off giving the Robe to a Fighter/Mage than a straight Mage. The straight Mage will still cast a spell every round (if well protected by the party), and the Fighter/Mage can make one or two extra attacks in the time saved by the Robe.

That is good thinking. My thoughts exactly. Also if your fighter/mage has it then he wont be disrupted even if casting when engaged in melee.Originally posted by Xyx:

You can't handle the truth!
What you all seem to be forgetting, is that the Ring Of Protection gives a +2 bonus to SAVING THROWS
Now, that is way better than an ac difference.
PS dont take the amulet of the master harper of the Amulet of Power, unless you have the extra bhaal abilities. The extra AC wont help diddly if you get levels sucked away by wraiths

So I just stood and listened.

A smart Fighter/Mage will also cast spells during combat, by utilizing the pause between his last attack and the end of his round. If you have The Robe, over half of your spells cast instantly. You can hack a bit, Mirror Image yourself, hack a bit more, fire a Skull Trap, hack...
