here's how to attain 5.7 million in gold
I'm new to BGII (in fact, I'm new to PC games, unless anyone is old enough to remember the Commodore 64) so I hope my idea of a tip isn't overly obvious. You can sell the staff of curing to the gnome behind the Underdark innkeeper (i.e. the father of the boy you release from the prison) for 5.7 million in gold provided it has a charge. You can then buy it back for 1100 in gold. Hope this is useful.

If you did this, it means you didn't install the Official Patch. The character holding the Staff was attacked by a Nishruu (probably the one the Drow guarding the sphere summon,) and its charges were drained to -1. -1 in hexadecimal can also be interpreted as 65,535, so when you sold it the game offered the price of 65,535 Staffs Of Curing for it. If you don't install the patch, you'll encounter plenty of other bugs and some of them might not be as fun.

kevin, you're right. This did happen prior to my installation of the English patch. I didn't know about the a patch but the load times and lagging game play in the Underdark forced me too learn.
However, I did not sell the staff for 65,000 in gold, I sold it for 5,700,000. Seven figures, not six. Hasn't anyone else out there had this experience? I don't want players questioning my veracity -- afterall I have a heroic reputation to uphold.

Some component of the Staff had negative charges, sometimes this is invisible. But this is definitely the cause...it can be easily recreated on a pre-patch BG2 by creating a Nishruu with CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("NISHRUSU") and letting it attack a character holding a charged object, then selling it.
