Why can't you rob shopkeepers by thretening/killing them?

Post by Mort »

I think you should be able to take all or at least some of the items in a shop by killing the shopkeeper. I know i can use steal, but I want to rush in and "Give me the money, or I'll KILL YA!!!" Image Image Image

you can kill them, but think of it this way.
the keeper doesnt have the items on them.
so when you buy them, they go and fetches the desired item. by stealing the item, you put it under your coat, when the keeper isnt looking. but by killing him/her, you dont get to see the item at all. so you cant get it.

I'm not impressed with the pickpocketing/shoplifting system in any of the Bioware or Black Isle Studio games I've played. The penalties for failure are so overwhelming that everybody simply reloads, and tries again. That's not a recipe for a successful gaming system.

What would I rather see? I'd like to see the ability as levels increase for thieves to get a better idea of what marks are carrying, with the adjacent ability to target a specific item. I'd also like to see the hit to reputation eliminated, and replaced with a severe fine coupled to a timed loss of access to all merchants in a given quarter.

And if pickpocketing succeeds, I think the mark should get suspicious and harder to pick for a while.

Just my two cents.

about actually killing em, surely if they die you can then simply loot the store room with all the items in it, after all he must keep em in the shop as they cant come out of thin air.

also i think low rep should get you higher prices as they will be scared of you, if you see the evil cloud and his band of no good murdering adventures you are not going to say "ok lets jack up the price and piss him off" nice, real nice! Image

I would have also liked to see merchants in the area become uneasy after you've successfully pickpocketed a few times. Perhaps one could specifically mention their concerns to you. Obviously, prices should go up, even if nobody caught you, because they really don't want your business.

If you pushed it too often in too short a period, I'd expect merchants to tell you they were just closing as you came to visit. Then a certain amount of time would have to pass before you could get to their wares at inflated prices, and finally back to normal.
