Well, Imoen is a passable thief, if you give her some items like Boots of Stealth or Gloves of Pickpocketing, and Jan isn't bad either...

Jan is good comic relief, but I recommend Nalia or Imoen, because they are adequate as thieves (spelt thief, not theif), and they are also more powerful as mages.

Imoen and Jan aren't bad, but isn't Nalia a dual-classed thief/mage? I think she's a lvl 4 thief and her thiefskills won't improve beyond that since she's dualclassed.

So is imoen, she is human, thus dual classed.

I've been harping on this a lot, so you can flame me if you're bored...

in soa, dual class is better, due to cap and no 10th level abilities, in tob multicalss can become gods, cause you can pick from two classes. the cleric mage combo, like sweet little aerie, becomes insanely powerful...timestop, greater acuity, 6 implosions anyone?

Jan, brring yoshimo being hackined into a party, is the best thief around, cause he's the only npc that will actually give you those wonderful spike traps and use any ability, and the lack of necromancy spells should not be a problem, since the two best are animate dead and abu dazim. your other mages, or in my case uber hacked sorc can supply those in a major way. spiked traps make the heart seal and demogorgon battle just too easy...

I alwys take imoen, since I've learned to compensate for the lack of really cool spiked traps,

Delayed action fireball and skulltraps galore,

and I just can't stand the little bugger.

Imoen is too cute, and while I get her up to really high levels, and she becomes 2nd best mage in my party, next to yours truely, of course, and I need her to use the equalizer and other cool longswords, She jsut is not that great of a thief. she's a little helpless and quite lost without you, and you still need to look after her cause she's your sister and needs you to look after her. she does pull her weight as a mage, but heck, I run a very heavy spell cast team and light on tanks. only two, in fact, korgy and jaheiera.

Course, with korgy you don't really need anyone else. I figure he'll reach greater whirlwind around finishing asylum...can't wait!!!

Jan is an excellent thief and a pretty good mage - the downside of his mage skills is that as an illusionist he does not get necromancy spells, so no skull traps or abi dazims (others too, but these really hurt).

This is kind of lame and he can't even read em off a scroll. On the upside he is a specialist, so although it takes him FOREVER to get any 9th level spells and hence alacrity and other 10th lvls, at least he gets two right away when he finally gets there.

He has a great personality, he teases everyone even the villains, but he never complains about REP or leaves the party. On the bad side he has a low STR and low HP, so he will often die in a big area effect attack, and if you want him to backstab he would need a STR enhancement.
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....

You should absolutely go with Jan! With his extra gear he has amazingly high theif skills. You'll pretty soon have 100 % in them all. More importantly, he starts with points in good skills. On the contrary to Yoshimo (why move silently if you cannot hide first?) - world's only Bounty Hunter who cannot lay traps, for example.

And then his personality and all the great interaction... In short: You haven't played BG2 til you've played it with Jan!

By the way, Haer'Dalis can also set high level traps and use any item...as well as improved bard song and mage spells, just give him a range weapon and you`ve got yourself a hell of a backup!

I'm sorry, but I say take imoen. i completely agree, yoshimo and jan are better in every way, but the whole point of the game is to save your wee little sister!

YOu battle dragon's, liches, demi liches and what ever to save your little sister, and in the tob expansion its to close out the evils of your shared father, so you take her along and coddle her if necessary to keep her safe. even though you are battling hellspawn and your life is a mess, she has to stay with you so she is not alone in the big wide world. Fighting liches is better than having her go off alone, and getting her throat cut by some stinking bandit.

Sorry, I build parties by personality, not skills, and while viccy will snipe at her, this game with

jaheira
viccy, aerie
korgan
yoshimo

is very fun.

You don't get it: Jan *is* a thief. Tell me why he's not good enough for you and I promise to prove you wrong.
